I work for a mental health agency and we have a lot of clients who were diagnosed with PTSD due to sexual abuse.
I have noticed that a lot of mentally ill people came from an abusive home and have experienced sexual abuse and other trauma.
It's not unusual for someone to get a certain diagnosis and then the diagnosis is changed by the same psychiatrist or by another psychiatrist. PTSD can include hallucinations, so yes, it's possible somebody might be diagnosed with PTSD and later get a diagnosis of Schizophrenia. Some people carry multiple diagnoses, though, so somebody might have both diagnoses at the same time.
PTSD is considered a lot less severe than Schizophrenia, and it's not as common for somebody to have a diagnosis of Schizophrenia and then have it later changed to something milder like PTSD. It's more likely that the patient would be diagnosed with Residual Schizophrenia (schizophrenia in partial remission).
However, it is possible that someone who was formerly diagnosed with Schizophrenia might go to a hospital that doesn't have access to records from the previous history and get a different diagnosis if the psychiatrist feels they fit the criteria.

oh yes, there are so many mental health issues that come out from being raped... and many other traumatic events. disorders such as DID... BPD.... PTSD....
the trauma that an individual goes through is such things effects a person in so many ways. mental health issues can occur straight after the event... or years ahead.
I think its important for a victim to seek professional help... either from a rape crisis worker... police, hospital staff... or just a counselor. they can then help determine whether physiatric care is needed.
i, myself am a victim, and have developed alot of mental health issues that have been really hard to deal with. i encourage you to seek professional help if this has happened to you.
yell if ya need some support

I'm pone to depression but being raped sure didn't help the situation. I think that being raped just increased the odds that I would suffer from depression and maybe worse. I was diagnosed with PTSD when I was about 25 years of age and there are times when I still experience flashbacks to the rapes and molestations. I wish that it was something that would truly go away and never return but there are incidences that bring it back to the forefront in spades and I have to deal with it all over again. I hope that you are getting the help that either you or someone you know needs.

Sexual assault can trigger a broad array of mental illnesses. It has been linked the various mood and anxiety disorders including PTSD as you mentioned. It is also believed to be a major contributor to a whole set of personality disturbances as well. So in short, yes it can be the trigger to almost any disorder from eating disorders like bulemia to multiple personality disorder (Dissociative Identity Disorder). Given the intense emotional and physical impact of such a trauma, it really isn't surprising.

I'm not a qualified professional.
I believe rape is so stressful and violent it could cause mental issues even in an extremely well adjusted individual. There has to be horrible guilt associated with it. A person who has been raped needs reassurance they didn't cause it.

It seems that rape does cause PTSD. The victim will relive the experience over and over but eventually it gets less in the severity. I don't know that it triggers other stuff.

Rape can most definitely create psychological problems for one who has not had a prior mental health problem, such as PTSD!!!
