With the lyrics and content of these so called songs, how do I show her that they are nothing but disrespectful and trash? ANY for of art, music included, that talks about sex, being players, disrespecting authority, and such SHOULD be banned from all minors (In my opinion). Other Parents opinion please.

Hmmmm....tough question. Maybe you could go through the collection of Rap and Hip Hop that she wants to listen to and try to compromise with her on some of it. That way it shows her that you are the boss and in control of the situation but it aslo shows her that you respect her and trust her judgement.

Another thing is to talk to her (not argue with her) about why you don't want her listening to that type of music. And try to listen to her about why she does want to listen to that type of music.
Communication is the key!!!
Bottom line is that you are her parent and you are in charge of her until she is 18.

That is not true that thay are all 'disrespectful and trash'. They sometimes talk about love and the problems in the world. Listen to Where is the Love by the black eyed peas. It talks that there is so much hatred and that humans should love each other and live together.

Also LinkinPark (my favorite ban) has a mix of rap and rock and roots in hip-hop. But they sing about the problems in the world. I'll admit they have a few 'profanities' but that only like in the sentence "what the f*** is wrong with the world?"

So before making a comment like that hip-hop and rap is only trash try listening to a variety of songs before making a judgement. When I have children I plan on letting them listen to music becuase it's creative expression I don't plan on letting them listening to everything but you cant be a control freak. Don't ban music like that though. It will make her push away from you.

Here's a tip: listen to some artist and then decide which rap/hiphop artist are appropriate instead of banning all.
Try the black eyed peas.

Every generation has this problem. Rather than banning anything, you should use it as an avenue of communication. Some of this music is so foul that no one of any age should be listening to it. But not all of it by any stretch. Some of it, like any music, is well done and has a great message to impart. Perhaps other answerer's can suggest groups that are uplifting instead of demeaning, I'm afraid those days are behind me. You have to educate yourself on why you don't want her exposed to what you find objectionable if you want it to mean anything to her. Otherwise you sound like you simply want to control her from growing up and she isn't going to listen to anything you say.

JD Salinger's Catcher in the Rye is one of the most offensive books I've ever read and it was required reading in my high school in the 60's. I doubt if anyone would even bat an eye today.

Someone else mentioned LinkinPark, and I wanted to say I had no idea it was hip hop or rap. I just like it and own several of their cd's. I'm 54.

ultimately you are the parent. You make the rules of the house. You have the right to determine what kind of music is listened to in your house. Tell her if she doesn't like you rules she can go get a job and find her own place to live and listen to whatever she wants. That will make her think twice about arguing with her. I agree that not all rap and hip hop is bad, but you would have to sit down an listen to it all or look up the lyrics to the songs to decide what is acceptable. That kind of music is not allowed in my house. My step kids don't like that but then they don't have to live here either. It is your house your rules. When they pay the bills they can make their own decisions.

If she really likes it just get her the editted version. All parental advisor cds have an editted version. When its the song but the cuss word are blocked, changed, or cut out. Its also whats on the radio. Things such as in Eminem's song "Superman" The real line is "b*tches they came they go" and the editted is "chickens they come they go." Do what you think is best.

if you actually did some research and tried to find some rap and hip hop that doesn't have cussing and all the other junk in it then i would agree more but that's like saying all blacks act like that and all whites act like this. that's not a fair and just way. The Black Eyed Peas are just one rap/hip hop group that don't have cussing and stuff like that in their lyrics. I think you should go half way with her and say "ok, you can have this kind ov music if you can find some beats you like that don't have unfit words in it for you". that way it wouldn't seen so closed minded and one sided. I am a parent ov a 12 yr old boy that likes rap and stuff too. there are other groups that don't have trashy words also like andre3000 from outcast is also good and instyle with the times.

Yes. Thank you. I believe you. I additionally uncover it nerve-racking to no finish. Especially while humans reply a query immediately for hip hop lovers and reply like this "Hip hop blows". A) The query used to be for lovers. B)If you have been going to be an a** approximately it, why the hell did you reply within the first situation. Thanks to many suggestions right here and an amazing video from Nevermore. I am fairly liking Atmosphere proper now. I additionally like in no exact order Eminem, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco,Common, Mos Def, Dr. Dre, NWA, Lyfe Jennings, Neyo, Jay Z, and a lot more. (:

This is coming from the other side of the table. My mom also doesn't like that kind of music, but she doesn't ban it. Have you listened to the actual songs that your daughter is listening to. Also she might not even be listneing to the lyrics. Half the time I don't listen to the lyrics on those kinds of songs.

My oldest is working on a PhD in Neuro-Psychology; he loves rap and hip hop, and always has. My 19 year old is in his first year of college. All he listens to is heavy metal. Both are in college, neither of them seems any more warped than the other kids around town!! Good luck, you can try, but I say pick your battles. There’s worse stuff out there to worry about than music.

You pay the bills right, but you should realize not all Rap and Hip Hop is violence, bling, etc. Maybe you can agree to let her listen to the more positive artists like Erykah Badu and Common, though you still may need to listen to them first because even these artists can have suggestive materials.
