I have had food poisoning in the past and although it was from eating in restaurants I am really concerned about not EVER going through that again. Any suggestions on how to keep my kitchen safe from food poisoning?
Also, what are some good tips on recognizing if a restaurant may have contaminated food?
I got food poisoning from a salad bar that had tainted dressing on it. Although I was a child when it happened, I remember telling my parents that the dressing tasted bad and was very warm. I nearly died from dehydration when that happened and have always carried it with me. I hate to try new foods, and rarely eat out anymore. It is a real problem for me.....help!

1st dispose of ALL sponges, they "hold" bacteria in. 2nd use only plastic or glass cutting boards, wood absorb germs. Always clean your cutting boards in between foods, never use the same board for meat, and again for veggies without washing in HOT soapy water. Also clean all veggies before using, and rinse chicken. I would also recommend using Clorox for kitchens. Also make sure all meats are cooked till no longer pink, and just to be sure I always cut my meat into half, regardless of what it is. I'm paranoid. Wash your hands after handling meat, and don't use the same utensil to turn different foods. And if you have to turn the water on use a paper towel, (turning on and off) and spray with a kitchen safe anti-bacterial spray after doing the dishes. Oh, and put food you want to "save" into the fridge/freezer within an hour or so. Hope this helps!!!!! A paranoid mother from the South!!!!!!!!

The best cleaning agent to use if bleach....kills almost everything. As far as your adversion to restaurants and eating out, that sounds like something you need to work out with a therapist. It is way beyond whatever I could say here, to make you confident about eating out again. Same for recognizing a restaurant that may have contaminated food. All I can say is, if it looks suspicious, don't eat it.

To stay away from poisoning in your own kitchen is to keep it clean. Use bleach to wash down your sink and counter tops. Wash your plates and utensils in hot soapy water preferably in the dishwasher. Use a plastic cutting board for raw meats. Wash it in your dishwasher when you are done or wash it in your sink filled with hot water and a tablespoon of bleach. Have a separate cutting board for your raw vegetables. Be sure to cook to the proper temperatures. And make sure your fridge is cold enough.

To stay safe in restaurants stay away from the troughs aka buffets. It is like a giant bowel that everyone feeds from. If it looks or smells gross, don't eat it.

Ummm... there are a lot of things you can do to keep your home safe - and you should do those things - but your real problem is that you seem to be bordering on becoming obsessive compulsive. I think you really need to go to a therapist. You will not be happy living in a bubble, no matter how cozy that seems to you right now. Much luck to you...

keep hot food hot, and cold food cold. the danger zone is from 41-140 degrees. Don't let any thing sit out on the counter for very long. make sure your dishes are really clean. make sure your counter tops are clean. there are lots of ways.

Make it a habit to throw away left overs. Put all your dressings in the fridge after opening - then throw away after a month.
