Ok, I checked it out @www.whitehouse.gov and these so called National Security Presidential Directives do exist ( so I'm sorry, h h, you are incorrect. This is very real ) If you take the time to read them you will also notice that congress has already approved them & in the event of a "catastrophic emergency" the president will run all three branches. Congress and the Supreme court won't have any say in the matter. That cool system of checks and balances you brag about has been circumnavigated. In the event of an emergency, the executive branch will assume total control of all levels of gov't, including the judicial branch. This is clearly stated. It troubles me greatly that many fellow Americans refuse to believe this. C'mon people, your civil rights and civil liberties are systematicly being erased. G W Bush is the most visible threat to American freedom there is and it's time to recognize.
These presidential directives were passed without any notification to the national press (other than quietly posting them on the Whitehouse web page) wich is why many of us don't know about them. This is all intentional. Karl Rove knew that freedom loving Americans would freak out if they anounced their intentions. It all took place behind closed doors in secrecy so once it became public knowledge it was too late. The ground work has alreadty been laid. When the next 911 conveniently happens right befor the '08 elections, many will find themselves asking "Hey, who elected Bush as dictator?"
So, to answer your original question, NO! This is not the freedom that our for-fathers died fighting for. Bush's disregard for the constitution is a discrace to anyone who made the ultimate sacrifice for this great nation.

Executive orders can be very powerful under a certain act of congress.

That act of congress is known as a DECLARATION OF WAR which as you know we have not done since WW2.

Even executive orders are subject to congressional/legislative review (senate oversight committee), and the judicial branch (Supreme Court).

At all times even when there is a declaration of war each branch of the government (executive, legislative, judicial) has the ability to check the others. They also each have the ability to put these checks into action when something is deemed unconstitutional.

Executive orders used during times of war, or during emergencies can be circumvented and abolished by the Supreme court, and legislative branch if needed.

This is the main difference between the US and other countries. Three levels of government all with equal power is one of the basic principles of the US government system.

That system is still in effect despite your rhetoric.

You Stated................
"The problem is that according to changes in the law Congress does not have the right / is not allowed - to review the declaration of an emergency for 6 months -

The things and the protections you describe are all gone look for yourself"

I am sorry but you are incorrect. Any executive order issued must be scrutinized by the senate oversight committee.

There is no new law which dictates that congressional oversight done by committee with secure access is negated. There would be dozens of US senators bringing this issue to the US Supreme Court if this was the case, it is not.

In addition to all of this, anyone can bring suit against the federal government in US Federal court if they feel that a law has violated their constitutional rights. This in turn means that the Supreme Court is never out of action.

You are more than likely getting your information from political activists, or the news. Both of which have a tendancy to only tell half of the story or take things out of context.

While the information you presented may in fact be executive orders that have been issued these executive orders are governed by two seperate levels of government all with the same amount of power as the executive branch. These orders may or may not be in use. Should they be used then the executive branch would have to justify their use.

My grandfather liberated a concentration camp in Germany and then stood in front of the Jewish prisoners and protected their former captors from being ripped apart because standing aside would have been the wrong thing to do. He was awarded a medal for this act. It now seems that all sense of justice has now gone and I am personally glad that my grandfather is no longer alive to see what became of the country he fought for.

great grand now all that has to happen is for it to be implemented. until then we are still freer than any nation on earth as we speak. even if it came to pass as you are trying to say it has now, we will still be freer than most of the countries of the world. the fact that it hasn't happened yet and never will makes it irrelevant.

SO what the f### is congress doing?? Protecting our rights?? No, they're all out running for president!

While everybody seems to hate President Bush, there are those of us who thinks Congress is absolutely useless.
