1. Use the self timer. for this you either need a tripod or a high piece of furniture to prop the camera on. This works better with digital because you can review imediately how the composition works. This is the traditional method of catching everyone at the family dinner without having an empty chair. you should always have the flash on, because it can be hard otherwise to know when the picture is taken.
2. Just hold the camera at arms length and smile. while this is really limited as to the poses possible, it actually can result in some pleasing candids.
3. Shoot into the mirror. You might want to flip the image right for left in photoshop so it is not reversed. This has the advantage over self-timer in that you can actually handle the camera while doing this and push the shutter at the best moment.
4. My favorite. Hand the camera to a tourist and ask. I look for someone that has a decent camera and is shooting pictures. That way they will be more confortable framing your camera, which should have focus and exposure preset or be on automatic.

depends what it is for, and who your audience are.
if it's a self portrait you should probably use some lighting and take it with something that you think will define you, put the camera in the angle you want and use the timer mode. experiment with it for some time 'till you get a cool shot. if it's just for myspace or whatever carry the camera around with and get shots yourself doing stuff during the day. don't look at the pictures till you get home and then choose the best one.
or you can just point and click at yourself. whatever you do don't use a mirror!
