All depends on what style you like, black appliances look great, depending on budget marble or granite countertops, corian.

First look into your design style for your kitchen. White is a bit stark but if it fits with what you are doing, it's fine. Black is a sleek look that dresses up any kitchen style but stainless is the look that is bringing in the bigger bucks these days. Work with a kitchen designer at Loews or Home Depot to see what style works best for what you want to do.

Try to avoid "theme" decoration. My cousin was nuts for Coke themes and spent a FORTUNE doing her kitchen in that from colors to patterns to whatever and three years later she spent another FORTUNE to get rid of it when she gotburned out on the Coke thing.

Black and white is good if you can break it up some wth the things you use in the kitchen (plates, towels, pot holders etc) for a splash of color.

Yellows were once popular colors for kitchens but PLEASE do NOT try to bring back the Avacodo and Goldenrod theme of the 60-70s. I still have nightmares about that color scheme.

I like white.
Hickory cabinets (lots of contrast)
Marble countertops
gray slate tile floors
little or no rugs
go very easy on countertop decorations
