I absolutely can't stand cross country anymore. I love running, but I can't stand this year in terms of cross country. My new coach (who is a complete idiot) makes us do track workouts on the cement track in the early part of the cross country season. We do about 1 or 2 track workouts a week. My shin splints kick in like crazy and I try to explain to her that I need to stop, but some people just won't bend. Also none of my friends are in it, which made the season last year some fun. Also, I used to be good, which is another added bonus why I used to like it. But now I suck, and makes me depressed. I would really like to get myself kicked off the team by skipping all of the practices but two of my three coaches are my teachers in school. My case of shin splints are getting worse and worse and my heart isn't into it this season. I am not happy anymore, and Worse of all my parents won't let me quit. They have the ego of, if you joined the season you are going to finish it.

Overtraining is a form of abuse; go to the school nurse and describe your symptoms. As long as the nurse is a Registered Nurse (RN), she has a responsibility to do the right thing and prescribe the rest you need to get rid of your shin splints.

Your coach is lucky your not my child; I would have no qualms whatever embarrassing the hell out of her in public if she really doesn't know her stuff.

As far as carrying out your commitment to the team, I can understand that. Once the splints are treated, do your best for this season. But get some medical help.

honestly thats not a bad plan, you can do this, run on dirt if at all possible until your shins stop splitting or beg your coaches to run on the grass, he's not an idiot and you need the speed workouts you're doing so stick with it, I hurt my knee in july but i'm still running strong and since then i secured a spot varsity, i push through the pain and i got a letter, just make the best of it, most cross country kids are nerds who dont or cant play other sports so just try, they're usually nice and it gets better when the season gets more serious, hey, at least he didn't make you barf daily, plus we have kids running until their nose bleeds, its really not that bad and you'll be glad you stayed, plus if you quit your school life is going to be hell

It is unfortunate when a sport is not fun. The main reason for having sports in school is to have fun and teach the students. If you are injured and the coach does not consider that a reason you should talk to the trainer or school nurse. I understand you parents position, but it is not their ego it is to teach you to honor commitments. If you are truly injured you need to take care of yourself.

tell your parents that they were making cuts this year and you didnt make it, and tell your coaches that your parents didnt want you running because they want you to focus on your schoolwork. i know a few people who have flawlessly done this.
