Bath him to remove the gunk. Treat your house and yard for fleas not just the dog.
Sprinkle the area after he is dry with gold bond or bfi powder. My vet has had me use it for irritated skin. See your vet if this doesn't greatly improve in a few days, he could have an infection that needs antibiotics.

The problem with fleas is for every flea on the dog there is about a hundred more eggs in the carpet waiting to hatch. Fleas do not get resistant to products like Frontline / Advantage or Revolution anymore than the Jews built up resistance to the gas chambers. You need to treat the enviroment and continue with treating the dog, but with the skin problems your dog has developed it will need veterinary attention.

Switch your product to Frontline for awhile. Fleas can get resistant to one product and will re-infest. Some people actually alternate between Frontline and Advantage each month to avoid this problem. If you are mid-month and its not time to re-treat, get a pill from the vet call Capstar. It will knock down the fleas short-term.
For the gunky sores, these are hot spots from the dog chewing at the flea bites. He may need antibiotics to clear these up.
See your vet and get some help getting this under control.

Use Frontline Plus or Revolution and use the appropriate amount for your dogs weight and put it in two different places.
Treat your yard and house with flea killing sprays that contain chemicals to inhibit maturation of the flea eggs.
Get a cedar bed for your dog.
If he hasn't seen a vet you might want to do that because he may have mange instead of a flea problem.

You have fleas in your yard and/or in your home. You need to treat those also. Contact one of your local professional pest control companies for a quote.
If your dog has sores and "gunk" he needs to go to the vet. Sounds like he's got an infection going on.

I have a full grown german shepard and he also gets fleas in the same spot. I have tried everything. I just bath him about every week and scrub the area very good. Just keep bathing him.

Sounds like a trip to the vet is your best bet. This sounds like a problem that goes beyond asking for advice online without a professional to look at the dog.
