From WikiAnswers:
"easiest way is to ask them. If you dont believe them, ask to see a copy of their DD-214(record of US military service). If it's really important, you can go to the website of the Nation Military Personnel Records Center, near St.Louis, MO., and follow the steps to obtain a verfied military service records."

It would probably mean you'd have to get a hold of their service record. Their service record would tell you when and how long they served.

The geneology sites list the dead and where they are buried. I have seen enlistment rosters for WWII. Don't remember what search parameter I used.

You can try The National Archives web site too.
