Fundamentalists. They usually come underneath bridges.

A "Fundie" is another term for a Fundamentalist Christian. The term "Fundamentalist" has been around since at least the 1920s, when Rev. Harry Fosdick gave an influential sermon entitled, "Will the Fundamentalists Win?" There's been a long-running debate between Fundamentalism and Modernism since those days. The term "Fundamentalist" usually denotes a person who believes in absolute Biblical literalism and is extremely theologically conservative. The term also came to be associated with Jerry Falwell's Moral Majority in the 1970s. The word is usually applied to Christians, but is also occasionally used to indicate the extreme right-wing faction within other religions as well.

Short for fundamentalist. It is a 19thC term and comes from a series of 19thC American theological ideas (rejected as superficial and simplistic by older established protestant churches) that is a throwback to the shipping blockades of the War of Independence. This is when few books other than the Bible were getting in to parts of North America and so a whole generation grew up without any real understanding of literary devices and other theological concepts. As fundamentalism has become such a derogatory term, the term other churches/Christians and theologians prefer to use is "selective literalism" as this better describes their beliefs.
Fundamentalist comes from the idea that there are "fundamental" principals to being a Christian.
Tied up in Fundamentalism is other disputed (and many would say flawed) theologies such as the rapture and also the endless prediction of the imminent return of Christ even though the keep putting it back when it does not happen.

"FUNDIES" are short for "fundamentalists". Fundamentalism came about early in the 20th century, where a group of American Protestants took everything in the Bible as literal truths. They believed in the fundamental teachings of the Bible as absolute factual, historical events. Those opposed to this, are not necessarily anti-Christian, but take the Bible to be less literal and more symbolic. Usually people who use the term "FUNDIES" are atheist individuals who try to denounce Christianity. They use the fundamentalist's extremist views to make Christians (any and all denominations) sound like ignorant people.

Just to add information from the others' comments - a fundie can also be an atheist -- the atheist-gnostics who ABSOLUTELY won't change their mind. Think they are 100% right no matter what.

Don't worry - there aren't too many atheist-gnostics out there. But plenty of theist-gnostics.

Gnostics = fundie.

Fundies are fundamentalists.

This means that they take an extremely literal interpretation of the Bible, even though the readings taken that way make no sense based on historical, linguistic and anthropological facts.

Typically, these people refuse to understand when a Biblical quote should be taken as something less literal (example: parables, metaphors, similes, etc), or that the original word in the original language might have more than one meaning (this happens often in the Bible). They forget that the Bible was written by men, not God, even if the many writers may have been spiritually inspired.

It's short for fundamentalist Christian, someone who believes in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and tries to live as closely to Biblical teachings as possible. Someone who loves God 24/7, not just on the Sabbath day. I think they are the best Christians around.

Fundamentalist by definition is someone who returns to or upholds the basic doctrine of their group. In the way it is used here, it is meant to poke fun, provoke, anger or slander those of us who are fundmental Christians.

In this unGodly world, I am proud to carry the banner of Christ and certainly the intent of those who call me a fundie does not dissuade me. It encourages me to draw closer to Him.
