Ah, but a rod was used at that time to discipline sheep and the shepherd didn't beat the sheep with it...he used it to guide them where he wanted them to go. He may have occasionally used the rod to physically get the attention of a particularly stubborn member of the flock or to prevent one of the sheep from injuring itself, but most applications of the rod were more consistent with setting boundaries rather than physical enforcement of those boundaries (he would use the rod to gently turn them in another direction).
I believe that spankings CAN be an effective and non-abusive way to discipline children if it is done the right way. However, I also believe that many people don't know how to properly use physical discipline and they end up doing more damage than good by using it. My parents did a very good job of using physical discipline (along with other methods) to teach me important lessons. They weren't perfect and I can think of a few times that physical discipline strayed too close to the line between discipline and abuse (usually when the forgot the first rule of discipline and that is not to discipline when you're angry), but most spankings my parents gave me were positive experiences (after the stinging in my bottom stopped).

I agree, there is a HUGE difference between a spanking and being beaten. The government is trying (most successfully, I might add) to take the control away from parents and then they wonder why today's youth are the way they are. I was spanked as a child and I didn't grow up to beat on my kid or other people. I remember having a respectful fear of my elders, don't see that anymore!
Spanking should be precluded by explaining to your child what they did wrong, why it is wrong and make sure they understand why they are getting into trouble for their behavior. No one in their right mind would start spanking a child without some sort of conversation about it.

Spanking is generally not necessary. Not that I'm against it, but if you earn their respect, you shouldn't need it. Been years since I spanked my kids, and they're very well behaved.
If you do spank them, don't do it if you're angry. If the child has made you angry, they won. Discipline should stop the incorrect behavior before it ever gets to the point where you're angry.
Both of my kids take martial arts with me, so we have lots of chances to beat each other up!

I disagree.
I was spanked. I turned out ok. On the whole, I think that a spank here and there does not do lasting damage to the psyche of the child.
However, I do not spank my children. From their earliest years, I chose instead to speak to them, to make my expectations clear, to understand their own thoughts and feelings as being just as valid as my own. I chose to show them love rather than violence.

I do! I got a good spanking when I did wrong as a kid and I've turned out wonderful! Lack of beating is what has ruined the modern child. What have we come to when you need to beat a little sense into your kid and they can call the cops, saying its abuse?

I don't think the government should be allowed to tell us how to raise our children. I agree with what the Bible says.
This country is supposed to be about freedom of speech, but if you spank your children they say you are beating them. Our children are not allowed to learn about God in school. If you say you think gay marriage is wrong it's a hate crime. This countries freedom is sadly disappearing...
