Listen - my daughter has been living on a cruise ship for the last 5 months and coconut is one of their favorites to work with - she said if you have a whole coconut - and only want to use half - break open and place in plastic bag and freeze it. It can stay for a longggggg period of time. When ready to use - defrost by allowing it to sit on the counter until completely defrosted....it will pop right out - no chipping needed...

On another note - If you have a coconut that has not been shucked, stab a hole in it with an ice pick and place as is in a flower pot on top of the dirt. A TREE will start to grow straight from the middle of the hole! Isn't that something????!!!?? It usually takes about 4 months for the tree to reach about 2 feet tall and 2 and one half years to reach about 5. She saw this with her own eyes as one of the locals demonstrated how to pop the opening.
