Many. Autism (sometimes called “classical autism”) is the most common condition in a group of developmental disorders known as the autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Autism is characterized by impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, and unusual, repetitive, or severely limited activities and interests. Other ASDs include Asperger syndrome, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (usually referred to as PDD-NOS). Experts estimate that three to six children out of every 1,000 will have autism. Males are four times more likely to have autism than females.

Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, Rett's, Childhood Disintegrative...look in a DSM manual...it's got all the info. Also, autism is not a disease, it's a disorder.
Autism is a disorder in which there are deficits or difficulties in anything social...so interacting and communication and playing with others is compromised, and so is understanding other people's points of view, feelings and emotions, etc. If a child is diagnosed with autism, chances are they will be a few levels behind in school, and their IQ will be lower than usual, because language is compromised also(because one tends to learn language skills from interacting with others) and they may have difficulties with daily living and self care skills. Asperger's Syndrome is where the social aspect is difficult, but their IQ and self care skills are where it's supposed to be...they may have difficulty making or keeping friends. And this is not just someone who can't get along with people (we all know people who are not so socially graceful). It has to significantly negatively affect someone's life majorly. Rett's (girls only) and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (where the child starts out fine then very rapidly loses a lot of skills) is actually very rare. These are all under the umbrella of Pervasive Developmental Disorders...basically this means that once you are diagnosed with any of these, you have it for the rest of your life.

I know three different types of Autism: Aspergers (the least serious), PDD (more serious than Aspergers) and Autistic (with typical symptoms). It is a very complex condition and they are doing many more studies on it than in the past since the incidence in the US and throughout the world seems to be increasing. They don't know exactly what causes it but, it may be linked to childhood vaccines. The earlier the diagnosis and intervention, the better chances for successful treatment of the disease.

hi. the main significant distinction between Asperger's and classic autism is that Asperger's little ones have not got a language/communique put off while they are youthful, the place classic autism does. What this means is that your brother has a variety of autism wherein he has complication bearing directly to people socially and expertise others socially. Many Aspergerger's little ones are very superb and do properly academically, they simply choose extra help socially. wish this facilitates.
