To be totally honest, I wouldn't leave... it will take you about an hour to get off of your plane, get on the air train and get into the city, then you'll need to allot another hour to get back to the airport, plus an hour or so to check back in (if not more than that....as you're supposed to be there two hours before) so you're looking at probably about three hours in Manhattan... you can shop in a few stores but you'd have to go back before you even bought anything (which you'd then have to pack...and bring along your luggage on your adventure?)

Sorry to break it to you, but JFK is simply too far from Manhattan to do much in 8 hours and be sure you make it back to board your connecting flight. Particularly when you don't know how traffic is going to be and it also sounds like you'll run into rush hour either coming or going.

What you can do is get the AirTrain from JFK into Jamaica, Queens which will let you out at Sutphin Boulevard. Go all the way downstairs to the E train and take it one stop to Archer Avenue (last stop). There are a great number of shops in the immediate area that you can go to quickly so you can get back to the airport and make your flight.

I hate to say it but you aren't going to be able to see much. If I were you I would choose one thing to see - for example if you want "cheap shopping" (hardly possible in NYC) you could go to Canal street and check out all the designer knock-offs. You need to take a cab directly from JFK to wherever you are going (Canal and Broadway for example) - you would not have time to do a bus/subway thing. I think Grand Central Station is very cool and you could take a cab there, eat, take some pictures - there are some stores in Grand Central. Then hop back into a cab and get back to JFK. Just remember during rush hours cabs are harder to get - morning from about 8-10 and afternoons about 3-6 or 7. Do some research and choose one thing to see, that's my advice!

Hi

While in the airport take the AirTrain to the Lefferts Blvd station and it will connect you to the A train. You can take the subway downtown manhattan and sight see in the village or near NYU. This will put you near food, shopping and people. You can usually spot a celebrity or two. They are always walking around. 30 year old NY'er.....enjoy.
