I don't believe in god, but I do like some forms of morality.
The ten commandments are redundant (don't steal, don't covet neighbor's things - duh), but I don't kill or steal.
I also don't covet my neighbor's wife. I covet the neighbor. :-)

My church just finished a series on the 10 commandments a couple of weeks ago. The pastor gave us a great acrostic to help us remember them (the first step in living them is to know and remember them!): LIFEGUARDS. His perspective was that the 10 commandments weren't arbitrary rules God gave us to control us or spoil our fun...that instead, they were lifeguards designed to protect us from danger.
With that perspective, each week, the pastor started by discussing why the commandment was important and then concluded with a practical discussion of ways to incorporate God's instructions into our life.
The first nine messages are available online at http://media.reallifeconnect.org/ in video and in audio format. Click "view our videos" or "listen to audio" to start the first message and then select additional messages from the menu on the right (the last message should be posted this week). Each message is 35 to 40 minutes long and though I recommend the entire message, if you want to focus just on applications, you can skip forward to the last 15 to 20 minutes of each message.
Really was a great series of messages and I had never heard or even thought about some of the practical suggestions for following each commandment. ...and I can recite all ten, in order, from memory because of the simple LIFEGUARDS acrostic.
...and if you only need suggestions for a few of the commandments (after what you read here and what you already have), then you can watch only the video (or listen to the audio) for the related message.
Good luck!

You cannot live out the ten commandments in your life. You can live out the two great commandments; total love for God and fellow man.
The ten commandments are the core of the old covenant, to which you were never a party to, and that ended upon the death of Jesus Christ who was the God who made the covenant with Israel. Covenants like this end upon the death of either party. In this case, both God and the (Jewish) Christian died to that covenant.
The ten commandments are then totally irrelevant. Christians fulfill the law through love. Keeping the ten commandments is merely complying with them, regardless of what is in the heart.

A woman married a very strict man. He gave her a list of rules. If she didn't keep the rules, be become angry and violent. Eventually he died and later she married again. The new husband was very loving and sensitive. One day she was cleaning the house and found the old list of rules. As she was reading them she realized that she was keeping all the rules without knowing it. She was doing it out of love rather than fear. This is an illustration between the old covenant and the new one fulfilled by Jesus Christ.

Good news if you are a Christian!
After Jesus fulfilled the Jewish Law, He turned the Ten into the Two. And here they are:
Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Mat 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.
Mat 22:39 And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Mat 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Why did He do this? Because ALL GOD EVER WANTED WAS CLOSE PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH HIS PEOPLE! HE NEVER WANTED A BUNCH OF SELF-RIGHTEOUS LAWKEEPERS! HE WANTS PEOPLE THAT LOVE THE SPIRIT OF THE LAW RATHER THAN THE LETTER OF THE LAW!
HOPE THIS HELPS!

tell them that you follow the laws of the state of ______ which have some origins in the ten commmandments, but that an outdated ancient code of conduct has no relevance to today's society except for the parts that were codified by the states and the country as they are laws that protect the law and order of society for the good of all.
particularly the ones about theft and killing.

Well, you cannot do it in your own power...that is what the Israelites tried to do and failed. That is the old covenant...trying to do it on your own. The new covenant is the same law (the 10 commandments) but it God writes it on our hearts to help us keep it. Heb. 8:10

Because of Jesus Christ we are free from the law.
The Ten Commandments are guidelines of how we should live our life.
Though it is impossible to obey the laws, if you broke one commandment, you've broken them all.
That's where God's Grace comes in.
