Four figures would be anywhere from 1,000 to 9,999 (which isn't much at all). Six figures would be anywhere from 100,000 to 999,999.

The number of figures refers to the number of digits to the left of the decimal point. Therefore, four figures would be less than $10,000. At the current minimum wage, that would be a part time job.

A six figure income starts at $100,000 because there are six digits. A four figure income is up to $9,999, which will not feed many mouths.

The numbers before the decimal point. For example $1,000.00 is four figure. $10,000.00 is five figure. $100,000.00 is six figure. I hope if your friends are saying there are good jobs making four figures, that they are referring to the bi-weekly salary.
