its like buying a car. It is all a negotiation. You can and should expect a signing bonus. Both the marines and army are doing those now. You should shop around... just because the recruiter at one place only offers you X dollars doesn't mean that another recruiter that hasn't gotten as close to his quota wont offer more.
Also be aware that in times of war those written guarantees don't really mean squat, because they will always contain weasel words.... things like "will do out best to provide training on....." or "will make a good faith effort...." In the end their needs will determine where you end up and what you end up doing. In past times I recall a directive during WWII when an entire class of fighter pilots were turned into infantrymen simply because that was where they needed people... and you can imagine the cost involved in training those pilots only to have them turned into cannon fauder.
While I have no idea why you are enlisting, you must have a good reason. You should however never sign anything when it is first offered. Take your time. Consider talking with a recruiter from other branches of the military. Go for the best deal you can get. You may find that air force or navy can offer you a better deal and if so go for it. Don't pigeon hole yourself with one branch up front. The reality is that when you leave the military there are few positions for tank drivers. Look at the military as a way of learning a skill you can use when you rejoin the real world.

I know that the Army will put your job guarantee in the Contract. I don't think the Marines will do that. If you want top be a tanker be absolutely sure that is guaranteed in the contract. Ensure the recruiter that you will not be enlisting unless the guarantee is there.
You only get one try at this, get it right.

Make sure to graduate first. You might consider going to Job Corp so that you build skills that the army will value.
Job Corp is a federally funded and provides job training, food, housing, medical, and perhaps academic education. This program gets students (age 16-24) prepared for their career. You can learn any of a number of trades that are valued by the military.
At least you will have a trade during or after the military.

soperson, you're an idiot, i thought you were done with your stupid remarks last night......anyway, go to http://www.marines.com/page/Home.jsp?forceHtml=true and request information there, as to what bonuses are available for what jobs. I'm not sure if the marines have duty station of choice or not, but go to that website and they should be able to answer all your questions. Or, you can also try seeing different recruiters to see all the different options, because one may know more than the other. Good luck!

you will be the few the proud. If you want to be a tanker then go for it because that is what they want you to do. The only reason why not to trust the recruiter is if in fact you want an office job or a job that is less physical demanding.

you have to remember that the recruiter can not guarantee you anything. no one can. when you enlist you will take a few tests to see what you can qualify for. you may want to beaf up on as much tank knowledge as you can. it would help but have a back up plan as well for another position.
Best of Luck and thank you!

Even if it is in writing, the recruiter may still lie and get by with it. So, just hope and pray.

It is about the same thing. Just make sure you get guarantees in writing before you sign up.

The Army uses newer tanks than the Marines.
Ask about bonuses.

im planning on being a marine scout sniper. i did my research and most marines have amazing contracts but if you get through the drowning you'll go though hell
during basic traning they drown and revive you, some dont make it though. It's mandatory
