Please don't give any smart or sarcastic answers, I am feeling quite distressed at this and worried

I have caught myself throughout the day sucking my thumb and rocking back and forth (not violently!)
If I am sitting in my bedroom at night etc

Does this mean there is something rooted deeper, some problem? I am so confused why would I do this

While I do this I am usually thinking of things that I am not happy with in my life, things going on

It sounds like stress, and not something to freak out about. However, when your life becomes so stressful or emotional that you exhibit behavior that seems alarming, you would benefit from finding a counselor to talk to this about. There certainly are cases where deep rooted problems surface and cause behavioral shifts, but plain ol' stress can do the same thing.

Just having an unbiased person to talk to will make you feel better.

You are obviously distressed about something in your life. If you suck your thumb it's probably from when you were a child. When you were younger, you probably sucked your thumb when you felt uncomfortable. When you get older rocking usually follows (then panic attacks if you don't solve the problem.) Comfront what ever you are uncomfortable about, and if you can't do it alone talk with somebody you trust and ask for help.

It is very simple. We ALL have an "emotional guidance system" that helps us to realize when our thoughts are not in accordance with our dreams, wishes, goals, etc... You have to realize when that sick feeling happens that you are focused on the wrong thing. When you are thinking about fun, positive situations your emotions give off feelings of joy, etc...

We all get stuck in the mental mud, but the beauty is we have the ability to leave that thought where it left us... in the mud and then just move on. The key is realizing that you are stuck. Once you are able to practice this then you will re-focus on positive, self affirming thoughts. This is why activity is so key to mental health. The more active you are the more endorphens, the more blood flow and the more confidence you have. Hope this helps...

There must be some security in that thumb. If you are having thoughts of hurting yourself, then call 911. If you are just afraid of "being in the moment" then you should be fine. Try a nice long walk or find a group of friends to be around.

It could be your way of dealing with your problems and things that you're unhappy with. Each of us has different ways of dealing with stress, and this may be yours. The mulling over everything that's wrong in your life could be a bit of a problem, because it's not good to dwell on these things, but if it helps you get over them, then fine.
If you are really concerned, I reccomend that you talk to a professional about this. Talking about your problems, worries, and everything else, could help get it out such that you won't do this anymore.
Best of luck.

My guess is that your right....you are doing this as a result of stress and obsessing about problems. Note that I am not a professional and will say you may want to talk to a health care professional. Everyone deals with stress differently...I stutter when I'm stressed. You should really talk to someone for stress relief exercises. Who is to say what normal is anyhow. You deal your way as long as its in a nonviolent way that is. Good luck

Sounds like there are some factors in your life that have cause great stress and your psyche automatically began to "regress". Please seek professional help with someone qualified in behavioral science. Do your homework and be sure they are experienced and that they include "listening" sessions where they are open to listen to all you have to say and try to help you in figuring out what's the root causing you to "regress". This person should also teach you how to modify, in new learning behavior, how to better cope with stressful situations.

yes and no, while it is quite normal to be distressed about things that are not happy in your life, it is a coping mechanism, it is a learned comfort technique from childhood. one thing you might try is to do something else to bring comfort, if it really bugs you anyway, i would try a counselor that has expertise in behavioral change. it really isn't a hard to fix and a good counselor can help very quickly. don't be afraid to go.

it could very well be that this action is a physical manifestation of your deeper worries. the best way to untangle yourself from this behaviour and to stop it before it gets worse is to seek counciling. even if you don't really know yourself what the problem is a professional can help you figure that out and also help you learn to be free of it. this kind of behaviour that you are exhibiting only gets worse with time and is much easier to deal with early on.

it's probably what you did as a baby/kid and whenever something bad would happen, you would suck your thumb and rock! You most likely carried that habbit on through the years, and now do it to this day! If you want to stop then when you find yourself doing it stop! and then you'll get into the habbit of not doing that when you think of something bad!!
