There are a few things you can do:

Go to travel sites such as Expedia, Travelocity, Priceline, Orbitz, Travelation, ect.
Look for specials on these websites. Then go the airline's site and try the same dates and times. Often times you can book a flight even cheaper.
Sign up for email alerts for low fares on the travel sites and airline's sites.
Download programs such as DING (southwest) Deal Finder (American) ect. You can find some really cheap flights, esp during non-peak travel times. I saw a fare of $49 one way from Austin to Nashville just today! (DING).

Unless you can reduce the price of fuel, landing rights and labor costs there is little you can do. However, you might try to fly on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. Also try to purchase your tickets over the internet at least 21 days in advance. Those three days are the days of low passenger loads, so the airlines want to fill those seats. Buying in advance saves money over the "walk-up" price the day of the flight at the airport ticket counter.

Look into flying out of another city. Compare prices from your location to the prices from the next major city. I live in south NJ and can fly out of Atlantic City but it's got limited airlines. I always fly out of Philadelphia which is only an hour away. Good luck

Take a job with one of the airlines and get travel benefits. Otherwise, check out priceline or one of the last minute travel sites. You can't negotiate airline fares.

Unfortunately there's nothing anyone can do about the high air fare.
One just has to either travel by other means of transportation if available, such as train/bus or stay where you are save up and then..... travel.

Best advice is to buy tickets:
- off season
- months in advance
- last minute deals
- or travel to another city for other airlines

good luck!

figure out a way to decrease the price of gas or tell people that crowd up the runways with private jets to get out of the way.
