The treatments are primarily surgical excision to possibly include a total hysterectomy and removal of tubes and ovaries, and removal of any intra-abdominal endometrial implants, usually with medication suppression therapy. Even with these treatments some form of analgesic medication may still be required.

There are some endometriosis websites in the UK and US with good information. Two are in an answer above.

There is no "cure." I hate to say that b/c I have dealt with it for close to 13 years and I know how miserable it can make you-unless you have it you can not imagine the amount of pain and other annoying symptoms it can cause. Your very best bet at long lasting pain relief is to have a lap with an endo specialist. Unfortunately there are only a handful in the country and some don't take insurance and most involve traveling-so it can be quite an expense, although some women do get their insurance to pay for the surgery. Most women believe that a regular obgyn is sufficient-they're a dr. right? They should know how to treat it women think. That is so very very wrong. There are so many misconceptions out there it is so unfortunate. Let me tell you, pregnancy will not cure endo. Lots of women will see their pain/symptoms go away/decrease while pregnant and possibly for even some years after their pregnancy but it can and will come back. As you probably know, endo is tricky in that is does not effect every women the same-some women are in excruciating amounts of pain-others have only normal period cramps. Thats why some women who can't conceive go to a fertility specialist and when tests come back normal the dr. decides to do an exploratory lap only to find they had endo blocking their tubes, the patient never knew or had symptoms to suggest it. Also, hysterectomy is not a cure as so many believe. Saying that though I will say this, hysterectomy is the preferred treatment if you have adenomyosis, (and not any other endo anywhere else). Adenomyosis is when endo has grown into your uterine muscle. Here's the problem that many are not aware of-estrogen is what fuels your endo so that is not something you want a lot of. It would make sense that if your body is no longer producing estrogen then the endo can not continue to grow right? I wish. Endo can and does produce it's own estrogen. This is why some women who are on bc pills, just progesteron, or Lupron or have a hyst still often times continue to have pain. It is true that some women who have had a hyst do not have endo pain. But in order for a hyst to be close to a cure, the dr. has to excise every little bit of endo anywhere-even the tiniest bit. Birth control, especially taken continuously so as to not have a period, for a lot of women helps to reduce your pain-although it doesn't work for every woman and for some it only works temporarily, some women even believe that those with endo should not take bc pills as they believe it makes it worse. Lupron is often prescribed by dr.'s but I personally would never take that as I believe it is too dangerous, and even if it does work to reduce your pain the FDA has only approved it for a woman to take twice in her lifetime-2 cycles of the med, as the long term effects are not known. And of course, if your pain went away it will come back after treatment. Regular obgyns have a roughly 30% success rate after 5 years, the true endo specialists have roughly an 80% success rate after 5 years. Endo experts do not burn off the endo, they do not prescribe lupron and they do not believe that it is impossible to "get it all." They know there is no cure and when they preform surgery they search every place possible and remove it all by means of excision. That is the closest thing there is to a cure. There are some women who swear by natural progesteron cream for treating the symptoms. I would suggest googling Dr David Redwine or Dr Andrew Cook-they are very well known for their endo knowledge and generally only deal with patients that have endo or pelvic pain. Also maybe go to www.obgyn.net for great information and a wonderful message board with very supporting and knowledgable women. There is also www.remedyfind and www.askapatient where real people rate their experiences with just about every possible treatment. As for coping with the pain in terms of pain meds I would ask your dr about a pain med that does not contain acetaminephen or other stuff, ask for something that is just a pain med and that should not be as rough on the kidneys. I hope I've helped some, I don't mean to be so negative but living with this myself I hate to see false hope and incorrect information given. I hope you find relief soon!

My daughter suffered terribly with endrometriosis and joined a pilot study to test a device to relieve the symptoms and the resulting pain. When it arrived it was a magnet which she had to attatch to her underwear. There was a great deal of laughter and scepticism but she tried it anyway and to her amazement it really helped ! It was called Lady Care and I think they retail for about £20 She's had a beautiful baby daughter recently and that seems to have no more trouble Hope this helps, Christine

I had this. Most doctors try antibiotics, first, to see if that will help. My doctor told me I had to have both my ovaries removed in order to not bleed to death, aside from the pain. After one year of suffering very badly with endometriosis, I had the surgery. I was SO relieved! The surgery went well, I felt wonderful, and I've had no problems since!

My aunt had that 15 years ago she had to have a hysterectomt. As it was before all this lasering came about. The hysterectomy cured the endometriosis but she was left with severe panic and anxiety attack. In her opinion and mine it would be the best thing to get the Hysterectomy done as lasering is only a short term solution to a long term problem. It does help in the long run as panic and anxiety attacks can be cured unlike endometriosis.

You don't say how old you are. If you are still young and wanting to have children, ignore my reply. A hysterectomy is probably the only real solution. It's a very miserable problem and I sympathise.
All I can say is the day after I had the operation I felt better than I had in years.

surgery and medication can usually help this condition but generally it does not cure it. Often it can return and further surgery is needed.
I am sure your kidneys will be fine so long as you stick to the correct dosages on the pain killers prescibed to you by your GP.
If you are still worried then maybe see your GP again or if the pain returns then see your GP again.

The only definite cure for endometriosis is a radical and total hysterectomy. Sorry for the bad news.
