My girlfriend and I and going on a 4 day royal carribean cruise to Mexico from So. Cal leaving 9/7/07. My friend is getting married on the ship. Yesterday, my g/f's car was broken into and her purse was stolen from under her seat. Luckily, I made her remove her birth certificate and social security card that she carried in her wallet (don't ask me why, I know it's really stupid. I had some kind of bad feeling a few days before that somehow it would get lost).

Going to Mexico doesn't require a passport until next year (if you are going by boat). We didn't bother to apply since you don't need one until 2008. Plus the passport office is really backed up. I've seen those "rush" passport services online though I've never used one. They seem really expensive. Any other suggestions?? She went to the DMV this morning to renew her license since it was coming due anyway. The lady said we "should" get it by next Friday but who knows especially with labor day approaching.

Yes, CA is weird. My g/f is originally from Ohio and she said she can walk into the DMV and get one immediately. That is weird to me since here in CA it gets mailed to you from Sacramento (state capital).

You must have a really strange DMV. I have never heard of one that sends the license in the mail. It is taken care of and handed to you when you pay for it. Last cruise I went on (before all the security) I had to have a picture ID and birth certificate or I got escorted off the ship before it left port.

Stay calm you will get it in time. Might not hurt to say a prayer though.
