I'll throw in another vote for you guys taking a cab. Even though there are 20 of you you can fit four in a cab, and it won't be that much split between four people. There should be a ton of cabs available in that area, too.
If you really want to take the subway, get the 1, 2, or 3 train at 14th st. and take it UPTOWN to 42nd St/Times Square. There, you can take the shuttle train ("S" in a grey circle) to Grand Central. The shuttle only has two stops - Grand Central and Times Square, so there's no way to take it the wrong way. Safety will not be an issue at the stations you are at, especially with such a large group. If you go to Google Maps and put in "Grenwich Ave & Bank St, New York, NY," it will come up with a map with the subway station locations right on there. How handy.
Have fun!

Will you be coming back very late to catch the train at Grand Central? If you plan on being any late, I would just hail a taxi to take you to Grand Central. While NYC is safe, I just never liked being down in the subway waiting for the train (even if I was with a couple of friends).
However, if you do decide to take the subway, you can just walk to 7th Ave and 14th St and take the 1,2 or 3, then you change at 42nd St to the S or 7 train to Grand Central.
Again, i would just recommend a taxi - from Bank and Greenwich, it shouldn't be too pricey (especially if there are few of you together).

Ok, with that amount of people, you shouldn't have to worry about the subways. Your best bet, however, would be to take a taxi (if only for convenienve purposes and not having to wait for a train).
For the train, you have 2 choices:
1) walk down Greenwich Avenue to 7th Avenue, make a left and go up to W. 14th Street. Take either the 1,2, or 3 train Uptown to 42nd Street and transfer to either the 7 or the shuttle to Grand Central Station.
2) walk up Greenwich Avenue to 8th Avenue, make a right and go up to W. 14th Street. Take the A, C, or E train up to 42nd Street and then take either the 7 or the shuttle across to Grand Central Station.

I think you'd be safe late at night in such a big group. Easiest way to get to GCT is to walk down Greenwich Ave to the 14th Street 1/2/3 station, and take any of those trains up to 42nd Street/Times Square. Transfer to the Times Square shuttle (S train) which makes only one stop at Grand Central. (That's an easier transfer than the 7, but there are signs all over Times Square to direct you.)

With 20 people you should be fine on the subway. Just walk over to 7th Avenue and 14th Street and take either the uptown 1,2 or 3 train and take that up to Times Square and transfer there to either the Flushing bound 7 train or the shuttle to Grand Central.
The fare is $2 one way and you need to purchase a Metrocard to use the subway.

Nothing major providing that you're not wearing your party dresses on the subway and/or not terribly wasted and/ or not flashing a lot of bling, cash, or flesh
Float over to 14th St & 7th Ave
Take the uptown 1 or 2 train to Times Square
Change to the Flushing bound # 7 train to Grand Central

If you put 4 people in a cab it will be much quicker, and will cost about the same. The cab fare will be about $9.00 + tip vs $8 on the subway. Don't waste your time to save a few nickels.

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH PRESIDENT BUSH!!!!!!! It is the crazy libs who you can blame for your search. If it were up to PRESIDENT Bush the only people who would be searched would be searched would be those who seem suspicious or look like a terrorist (sad but true is that the Arab people are the ones who are committing attacks). IT IS THE LIBERALS who feel that searches should be random. Because of this "political correctness" innocent people have to go through pointless and annoying searches too. i.e. my grandma had her bags checked at the airport. STOP BLAMING THE PRESIDENT!!
