I have a Dell Inspiron B130 that came pre-loaded with XP. I have no disc. So how do I switch back to it?

2007-08-27 10:05:36 · 13 answers · asked by barbevans04 2 in Computers & Internet Software

...I bought the computer directly from Dell. I asked them about it and they said that they no longer sent discs and I would have to contact Microsoft if I wanted to purchase it seperately.

If you have a partition (i think dell preloaded normally do) you can restore XP from there, if you have a dell CD or restore CD insert that else you may have a option at boot up (press f8 during start up) or go into your bios and search there.

If you do not have any XP setup discs or restorable partitions then the only way you would get XP back legit is by buying a copy somewhere which is hard now the shops don't sell them!

Let me know if you find any XP related material on your machine and i'll guide you through restoring it.

Edit 2:

As you have no disk check for a partition of XP setup by looking in computer management in control panel and clicking on disk management.

do you have a default button that will clear everything out and default your computer back to the date you bought it?

dell has that option, but at the moment I am not sure how to get it.

You would be best to call dell ask them.

I have done it twice so I know it works.

if you can, make sure you save anything you don't want to lose on a disk cause everything will be back to your first day of using it.

then again there is also a way to take the memory back to a certain date. so.

if you can't find it e-mail me and I will get the info.

The computer if you bought it from a business should by all rights come with recovery disks. If it didn't, then you got ripped off. If you bought it personal then you need to buy windows xp on your own. I have heard nothing but bad news from vista users and microsoft has alot of splaining to do. Good luck

Get a used Windows XP disc and install it.

You should have a sticker on your computer with your activation code on it. Type that in when the XP install requests it. You can find used XP discs all over the internet: eBay, Craigslist, etc...

while your computer is on, put in windows XP CD, and then restart and boot off of it. but this will make you lose allllll your data. so back up what you want. i have heard that it is not recommended to do so. so ask a computer professional before you do it.
