I have a whole chicken, and want it barbequed. Not like on the grill, just made with BBQ sauce. Do i put the sauce on the whole time, or cook it most of the way done first, and add it at the end? Also, how long would i cook it for, is there like a so long per pound thing? It will be stuffed. Thanks!!

You roast it in the oven and add the sauce during the last 15 minutes of cooking. As a general rule meat should be cooked 20 minutes per pound....so a 3lb chicken should cook in one hour.

Most BBQ sauces have a high sugar content, so you run the risk of carmalizing the outside of your stuffed chicken if you start basting it at the beginning. I agree with poster #1, who said start basting the last 15 minutes or so, but I would start about 30 minutes before. If your bird is stuffed, you may need to add a few minutes to your 1.5 hour cook time at 350 degrees. As another poster said, wait until the juices run clear and if you start to move the leg, it feels like it will come off in your hand, it's done!
Happy eating :-)

Food safety guidelines suggest that you bake any type of stuffing on the side. be sure to pe-heat your oven to 400 degrees & take any bags of liver and gizzards out of the chicken. Place in a roasting pan & salt and pepper the outside and inside of the chicken. Cook for 15 minutes and turn down to 350 degrees and continue baking for 45 minutes. Baste with your favorite BBQ sauce 15 minutes before you are ready to take the chicken out of the oven. Allow the chicken to sit for about 10 minutes loosely tented with foil before you cut it. This recipe will work well with chicken pieces too. The BBQ sauces have a lot of sugar and tend to burn if you cook them for the entire hour. The high initial temperature helps with browning and keeps the juices inside .

Brush the sauce on before you begin and baste the chook while cooking. Brush again after an hour or so. A standard size 12 chicken stuffed should take about 1.5 - 2 hrs. To test if it's cooked use a skewer and prick the breast deep to see if it runs redish juices. If the juice is clear its cooked ...

you can baste it while cooking just watch it doesn't burn. deff baste it more before you pull it out to get it all ooey gooey.
oh if you want to slow cook it so it's tender and falls off the bone. go for 300 but it will take a lot longer.
i just did 2 racks of ribs and cooked them from 2pm-730pm and basted the whole time. they were sooooooooooo good.

Put a lot on in the beginning. Check on it throughout the cooking time to make sure you don't need to add more. Add some throughout the cooking time if you want it extra spicy.
