The priest at my church used to always say this. Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not?

Holelier than though, LOL, my Priest was a lush, God rest his soul. I remember watching my Uncles roll him out the door at the end of my Aunt's wedding.
But he was one of the few men who had my total respect, even stood with me faithfully when I told him my problems with religion.

but one of the best men I ever knew.

First of all, times were different back then, and they did not have the access to clean drinking water that we have so they had to have wine. Second, I believe we are allowed to drink, we are just not supposed to get drunk. You can have a glass of wine and not get drunk. I don't think Jesus had a problem with drinking, but I do think he had a problem with drunkenness.

LOL about your priest (Not about him dying though, I am very sorry about that). When my husband and I became engaged we met with our "family priest". When we met with him for the first time, he asked my husband (fiance at the time) why we picked him as a priest. My Husband said "well you seem like a nice guy". Our priest, said, I am not that nice of a guy, I have gotten drunk with her parents". He was wrong about not being nice, he is one of the nicest and most spiritual people I have ever met, but he was right about getting drunk part....well at least buzzed...with my parents. Good times with the family priest.

The Bible says that whatever you do, do all things in moderation, and whatever you do in word or in deed, do all to the glory of God.

The Bible also says do not be drunk to excess, but rather be filled with the Holy Spirit.

It also says that if you have the liberty to do something, but it would cause someone else to stumble, then your liberty becomes sin.

Of course, having been a counsellor at a Teen Challenge program, I've seen first hand and close up the effects of alcohol on a person's judgement, so I think I will simply abstain. Nobody ever got hurt by saying "no", and nobody has ever had a driving problem by staying sober.

Some people suggest that the wine Jesus created was non-alcoholic, but as a Jewish believer in Jesus, I must say that the Jewish tradition has never been to use non-alcoholic wine during festivals. Either way would be conjecture.

But, in either case, if drinking an alcoholic beverage would cause someone else to stumble, then it's best to not.

Wine was diluted then. I visited Cana where Jesus reportedly Changed the water into wine. The monk I was talking to told me that the wine was only 1/5 wine and 4/5 water. He was also accused of being a drunkard because he hung out with lower class people. Had supper with those who were known drinkers. It did not matter to him because he was doing the work of God. He said he came to heal the sick not the well.
No to your answer. Jesus did not say you could not drink wine.
But everything in moderation. You know right from wrong. You know that when you drink too much, you don't have control of your mind or body. Listen to that voice that says no sometimes. Don't try to use scripture to support physical trappings and things that are fun temporary gratifications.
When you drink too much, you open yourself up to the dark side.

Jesus change water to wine and he did it only at the wedding celebration and then he left. So, We can drink wine, (but not hard liqour), when we have something to celebrate as a sign of happiness and acceptance. Although, we should not drink to a point where we can't remember how to go to the bathroom. In each special occassion, there is a toast, so therefore after the toast, we put our glasses down and never pour liquour or wine in it to be consumed again.

Well.. let me start by saying I'm a Deist.. so I might not belong in the conversation... but according to many people who have studied the Bible in it's ancient languages.. it shouldn't translate water into wine.. it should translate water into drink.. as in something that was drinkable... it was assumed it was wine because wine was the most common way to make water drinkable (lots of bacteria in the water would make people sick if they didn't kill it off with alcohol many times). So it's possible that it was meant to be read as he just cleaned up the water.

That's what I heard anyway.. I think there are a couple of other references to the passage to could be used to argue that it was in fact wine... I'm just saying there's a valid argument it wasn't.

I believe that great wine is a gift from God. Some people of religion want all of us to go on a guilt trip. I`m not going.

I agree it is a gift, to be used wisely. Like all good things in life moderation and balance are the keys to happiness. I, like your priest slip occasionally but still maintain a healthy appreciation of the gifts I am given and the blessings that surround me.

Jesus never said "Thous shalt not Drink"... So I don't know where this is coming from. Drinking is ok... as long as you dont get DRUNK and intoxicated. Drinking was to be done in moderation. The sin kicks in when you start getting tipsy and grab body parts and what not.

All things in moderation. Wine is healthy, but because of the alcohol, we can easily get intoxicated. Jesus never got trashed, but it does mention several characters that got drunk throughout the Bible. I think we can drink, we just have to be wise about how much we have... meaning don't get sloshed.

Disagree- the wine you are referring to was "NEW" wine, in our terms...grape juice- in the bible there is a distinction between the 2-- new wine & fermented wine (the alcohol) we are discouraged from partaking of the fermented version of the grape.. Christ's blood is represented by the "NEW" wine - the PURE juice from the fruit.
