Smell the leaves. If it smells musty throw it in the garden. If it smells OK it should be fine to brew up and enjoy your cup of tea. If you didn't notice there was anything wrong in the taste with the tea your friend served you then the leaves must still be good and no harm should be expected.

There is no for concern. Tea does not spoil or get rotten. It does not necessarily expire, it just loses its concentration. The effectiveness of tea is based on how well it was stored. It should be kept in a cool, dry place when you store it. And you shouldn't worry because since you boil it in hot water anyway, it should kill all the bacteria that you might suspect to be inside it. The only reason there is an expiration date is because people won't by anything w/out an expiration date...just acts as a guide.

probably not, although the 2004 one is a bit of a worry, what i would do is get a new package and see how long till it expires for example if theres 3 years left, then it means the the tea from 2004 was probably good. Or else just wait and see if you get ill effects and if you do go to doctors.

Anna,
I guess that as tea used to be imported in tea chests that could take years from picking to drinking, and I have not heard of one report of illness though brewing it up, it must be ok. What can go wrong with it ? It is dried leaves.
Perhaps even it has "matured", making my favourite strong "engineers tea".
Bob.

This won't hurt. If it goes funny it's just ultra DRY tea, but no worries there. It may just result in a weaker tea, in which case you just use 2 tea-bags.
It's similar to companies that bottle water, they also put dates on it.

No - it is just the time it is good for - so for tea that will just be the time the flavour is best!

It shouldn't hurt you at all; other than being stale there is probably nothing wrong with it.
