I'm always hearing cautions against eating stuff with raw eggs in it. I used to do this all the time as a kid (cake batter, cookie dough, etc.), and to the best of my knowlege, they never caused a problem. Do you PERSONALLY know of anybody who has had a problem where it is certain that the egg(s) were the culprit?

Yes, my mother became very ill after undercooked-not raw-eggs. It was very unusual, and I believe it was because it was a fresh egg from a farmer down the road. That's the only time I've heard of any true story regarding egg related poisoning. I think you're fairly safe if you eat store-bought eggs, I've eaten raw eggs (in cake batters and the like) and never had a problem. I'm not sure if it's just a tale told a while back, maybe it did have some truth to it when the eggs came directly from the hen house outside.

Yes, as a microbiologist, I've known lots of folks who ended up with an infection (mostly salmonella, but there can be others) from eating raw eggs.

Its not usually the inside of the egg that is the problem, its the outside.

Unfortunately, chickens may defecate (poop) on the eggs, contaminating the outside. Since eggs generally don't get decontaminated, but cracked open, the salmonella can be transferred into the recipe.

In addition, these recipes may not be cooked (ice cream, for example) so the bacteria live on in the food, transferred from the contaminated eggs.

Not all eggs are contaminated, but you should be very careful while handling them, washing your hands before and after any food preparation.

No, I don't...and I've made shakes with raw eggs in them several times, besides eating cookie dough..cake batter, etc.

But do know a gal who cut her banana up with the same knife she used it to start the peel and wound up almost dying before it was correctly diagnosed as a parasite from the country the bananas came from...
