there is a period after mating called the 'tie' where the two dogs can be stuck together for up to half an hour...it can get worrying..but its normal...its when one of the dogs starts to panic you want to worry. The dog should come free eventuallybut if it is taking too long some cold water over them does the trick. As far as i'm aware there is no risk from death in this situation.

you make this sound like you currently have two dogs stuck together in your garden as a case of "back yard breeding" and havn't done your research first and are now panicking because your dogs are stuck together.
am i right?
thats what it sounds like to me.
if you are, and had, researched then you would know that them getting stuck together it normal and is the dogs ways of ensuring that making it completed. the only time getting stuck can hurt either dog is when they either panic and pull and the female damages the male, or, if the female is far smaller than the male and the male damaged her insides but neighter could cause death

Chances are she is, you won't know for sure without an ultrasound from the vet and that can't be done for several weeks. Keep in mind while a female is in heat and receptive to males she can get pregnant with puppies from ANY and ALL males she has mated with. If you suspect pregnancy and don't want pups at this time, consult with your vet about termination.

Not to my knowledege, if the dogs are back to back while mating it means that the female dog as tryed to pull a way, if the dog are back to back you need to keep an eye on the male as he may twist his testicals if that his the case you need to try and help failer to intervine may cause damage to the dogs reproduction organ.
Never throw cold water over the dogs

When dogs are Tied (or "stuck together") the danger is that one or other of them can be injured if the b1tch panics & tries to get away from the dog. That is why matings should always be supervised by experienced handlers.

I don't think so. Eventually, the engorgement will abate and the male will be able to withdraw. Safe enough, I guess, unless they start biting each other because of discomfort. That's way breeders harness the female prior to mating.

Not that I have ever heard of. Just leave them alone. The male will eventually get lose soon enough. The female is not to blame for this situation.

Only if you try to separate them. If they're stuck leave them alone and let nature take its course. And by the way, she's pregnant!
