It depends on the type of mange.
Demodectic mange is the mite that naturally lives in the hair follicles of the dog. The hair loss in this mange is due to an allergic reaction to the mite. It is not contagious to other pets or people. It is easily treated with ivermectin (avermectin in the herding breeds).
Sarcoptes scabiei canis (Sarcoptic mange) is highly contagious and can be spread to humans and family pets. It is a scabies like mite that burrows in the skin and causes problems. Also treated with ivermectin. This is the one you do not want!
A skin scraping at the vet office, or the appearance of similar symptoms on other pets or a reddish, crusty, itchy rash on humans is how it is often diagnosed (though skin scaping is also used on people).
