Hi there, any of you have puppy friendly garbage cans at home? I'm looking for one that has a top that closes, not just one of those flippy tops. And oh yeah, I live in the bay area. thx!

We get this question from obedience class students ALL THE TIME.

Think about this for a while.

You're complicating the problem.

You don't need a different type of garbage can!

You need to put the garbage can some place where the puppy can't get to it.

Problem solved.

Oh boy, I just get a chuckle out of that one. Cause our Lab who passed away unfortunley last week, due to old age. Was just such a chow how. We had to put child's safty locks under the kitchen sink. Heck, she figured out how to open those locks too. There was no holding her back. And she was 13 years old. I will miss her, cause it drove me nuts coming home to have picked up everything she pulled out of and dragged arround it. Well, as for your dilemma, purchase a colar with a beeper noise on it. You find that in a pets store. It's worth it. I purchased one for my puddel who would run towards people and I hated that. One push on the button and it stopped him from doing it. The same would be for your pup. However, as the Veterinarian first cause I do not know the voltage of these shockers.

I've found the best kind of garbage can is a galvanized steel one that has open handles on both sides and a cover with a handle on it. Then simply use a bungee cord and hook it onto one of the handles, run it over the cover through the handle, and then over to the other handle and hook it there. I don't think your dog will be able to get it open.

Try any shopping mall, hardware dept. Look for one with a twist lock or snap top lid. Or try putting the garbage pail in a cupboard.

Costco and Target have great trashbins. I used the Stainless steel one and they retail for about 70.00$ but is well worth it. Find ones that have a good lid opening/closing mechanism as some can be flimsy.

Perhaps a hardware store would have racoon/bear proof garbage cans. Those would probably work well for a puppy.

Just get a bungee cord or 2, criss cross over the top even if she pushes it over it won't spill. Try home depot or lowes even walgreens or k-mart.
