My dealer volunteered this information when I took my car in for 20K service. Stated that my tires were close to breaking my state safety limit and that I definitely needed the rotors replaced as well. Is this standard operating procedure or should I be wary?

It's possible, but unlikely. Now, its true that the rotors on those vehicles is pretty thin and aren't supposed to be machined. If they are worn or have excessive runout, we're to replace them. The warranty on brake pads and rotors is normally 12months/12,000 miles, which ever is first.

It wouldn't hurt to have a second opinion on them; I can tell you from past experience, that normally, we used to replace frnt brake pads and rotors between 25-35,000 miles as a matter of course due to normal wear and tear. However, driving conditions vary around the country; the San Francisco Bay Area, traffic conditions are poor and there is a lot of stop and go driving. On my own vehicle, (not a VW), because I drive in a hilly area, I end up replacing pads and frnt rotors every 20-25,000 miles.

So, go have them looked at elsewhere for a second opinion; if not for any other reason, for peace of mind. Besides, the job might be less expensive elsewhere.

Hope this helps, a car nut.

20K? I would be very suspect of that. Unless you are riding your brakes all the time or are doing quick stops every time you put your foot on the brake, I would not think that the brake pads would be worn enough to replace, and certainly the rotors should not need to be replace.

I think I'd go for another opinion.

It depends on how you drive.

I have noticed that VW rotors do wear quickly. If you step on you brakes frequently (ie in stop and go traffic). It is possible.

However, if you are weary of what the dealership recommended, get a second or third opinion. Many brake shops will inspect you brakes for free.

No, it's standard operating procedure at VW to replace brakes and rotors which is CRAZY.

Go to NTB or elsewhere for now and change your rotors at 40k minimum at VW later.

I have a New Beetle and didn't change my rotors at 50k, for example.

NOT AT 20K! maybe resurface the rotors, but not replace. take your car somewhere else.
