The smell, taste, anticipation, variations, etc. are truly heavenly.
The breath, headache, yellow teeth (not mine though) and price are truly hellish.

Gift? no, it IS god.
Like a true god, its presence doesn't leave us unmarked. We must take care of our bodies in order to maintain communion with it. Proper dental care is a must if we wish to participate in its divine intervention into our consciousness.

Ah! This actually WAS an issue when coffee hit the western world! Some heavy-duty religious deacon types sent a sample of "the demon bean" to the Pope, sometime in the 1600's, asking that he declare it wicked, as it 'inflamed the senses and addled the mind."
Somehow, Mr. Pope managed to get one of his aids to brew him a cup and, upon tasting it (presumably with milk and sugar) declared that he would instead have it blessed!
The monks liked it because they could stay up for days and pray.
In Germany, generals and leaders of the aristocracy did their best to keep it within the upper class, with the rant that 'good German beer makes for better soldiers!"
(I guess that would be true. How many fights do you see breaking out in a Starbucks?)

Coffee has nothing to do with the Middle East or Middle Eastern Gods or Afterlives. Coffee is from the Central and South Americas. It is a blessed plant of the American Gods. You become a little more Incan with each freshly brewed cup.

Like all things,,,you get a little good with the bad....You have decide whether the good outweighs the bad...hard decision. Brush your teeth after you drink it,,take a couple of aspirin, and get someone else to pay for your coffee....
It is a bit like high heels....do they really make your legs looks good enough to spend hours of Hell, walking around in them?
And then there's chocolate....you know it's all good...but wait....doesn't it go to your hips? uh-oh,,,good and bad again.......just take the chocolate and apply it directly to your hips....it will end up there anyway....
You get no wisdom from me today. My wisdom gene is on holiday...

According to Jeremiah, God's mercies are new every morning. Since I start my morning with coffee, I'd have to say it's a gift from God.

There are some health benefits with coffee. It jump starts your metabolism by making you go to bathroom and defecate. Some people have irregular bowel movements, the caffeine in coffee can be helpful in these cases.
But on the bad side, coffee is extremely addictive. Much like nicotine, cocaine etc.

the LDS church thinks it is a sin along with sodas and alcohol
edit: yes, de-caf anything is technically okay, but most mormons don't drink it. its the caffeine that is a sin of sort
