Do interns make any money, or do they work for free? I am pursuing a degree in electrical engineering. What should I look for?

By law the company must pay you at least minimum wage (or the equivalent to it in 'salary'), but I haven't heard of any companies who hire interns from college, in any engineering discipline, who don't pay more than that -- on the order of twice minimum wage. Interns don't work for free (it may *seem* that way to some, but they don't).

Exactly what you earn would depend on your field of study, the year you finished in school, and possibly your GPA.

When you reach your sophomore year, start by asking the college dean's office for a list of companies who hire interns and start calling.

Interns make a decent living, about average for any part-time college job. BUT, think of it not in terms of how much you earn, but how much free education you receive!!
