Ha - Never experienced this - I would be peeved as well.
I did live in an apartment once that had a switch they we never found out what it was for . . . doubt it was hooked to anything, but we always joked about turning off the lights to some woman's kitchen in Barcelona.

Yes! That is so annoying!
Or when there are so many light switches all in the same area that you don't know what does what. It's like that in my kitchen...off the top of my head I can count 9 light switches just within the kitchen and pantry area. It's too much for one person to handle!

This refers to building codes, light switches must be certain distances from certain types of water sources.
As for everyone with switches that lead to nothing, most likely they are switches that go to an uninstalled ceiling fan outlet. Many builders will install the wiring to a ceiling fan even if there isn't one to install so you have the option to install one later.

AHAHHA. I hate that as well.
At my dad's house, the switch to my light is 2 rooms over.
How that makes sense, I'm unsure.

If the houese is old and it was rewired many times that can happen. But if wiring was installed correctly that shouldn't happen. And I don't like it either.
