We had a party of seven and the automatically added gratuity was set at 20%. The service was fantastic, but it was already at 20% so we didn't add anything. Normally the restaurant's auto gratuity is 15-18% in which case we would have added a little. Just curious about the viewpoint of those working in the service industry.

As a server, if the gratuity is 20% I would not expect more. If it was 15%-18% and I bent over backwards for you, then I would feel like I earned more.

Usually, 20% is considered a good, fair tip in the service industry. 7 people is a lot and does require a lot of work, but 20% is fair.

Now, if you have 15 people I think that maybe 25% would be a fair tip. The more people, the hard the waitress has to work.

When I was a server and when I would add the gratuity for a large party, I would NOT expect any more tip. If you think that the service deserved more then 20% then add it on. However the 20% tip would still be greatly appretiated.

Any restaurant or other such establishment which automatically tacks on some "gratuity", whether 0.01%, 5.0% or any amount would be unscupulous and possess no right to their license to operate. Gratuity implies appreciation when offered of the free-will of a customer, at the customer's discretion. Wouldn't matter to me if some hypothetical 5-star restaurant where an average lunch costs in excess of $750.00+. I would not let any swine steal money of which they do not deserve. Theft being wrong anyway. Maybe when the customers tell the amateur clown running the business that they refuse any gratuity, that he/she should instead pay a decent salary to employees, else they refuse to eat there, then the same poor slob either conform or lose his/her business from loss of client base.

I would add more if they really went out of their way to make your time a great experience. Also, don't forget that in most restaurants servers have to tip out an average of 3-5% of either their tips or their total sales so that 20% tip is really only a 15-17% tip.

No they don't expect something more. 20% is the suggested amount doesn't mean you have too give it. It depends on the bill also. A tip is a tip. You decide what the sevice is not the restaurant.

gratuity goes to the server or rs of your party.
you don't need to tip more unless they did a crazy amazing job that warrants it.

If it is added into the bill, extra tipping isn't expected unless the server went above and beyond.

I would not add any more. 20% is sufficient - especially if it was added to the entire bill (tax and all).
