A good brand of 35mm camera.
Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Minolta, Leica, Contax, Pentax. Any one of these would be a great place to start.
As for where to buy, your best bet is to look at the used equipment market. You can get a great camera for a great price, especially if you want to start off with a manual focus camera.
I have had great service and response from KEH Camera Brokers in Atlanta. I have received everything I've ordered from them in two to three days in perfect shape. They have a rating system that tells you exactly what you're getting from equipment that has been well used to equipment that is like new. They even sell new equipment. Their web site is: http://www.keh.com/OnLineStore/home.aspx

My goth! Nobody has mentioned the Canon AE-1. There are two main versions of it, AE-1 (circa 1978) and AE-1 Program (circa 1981). They sold a bzillion of them. Best of all, the battery they use is a little lithium battery that you can still get. Many older models used a battery that is not available anymore. Also, the AE-1 has an electronic shutter control, meaning a microchip times the shutter speed -- so it's more likely that it will remain accurate.
You can buy them all day on ebay--no, sorry, not for sale at Target etc. You should be able to find one for about $80-100. Try to get the 50mm 1.4 lens, but the 1.8 lens is fine. Don't buy one with a lens not by Canon. If on ebay, buy only from somebody with great feedback. Look at the pix closely. Good luck.
The one thing that is common for old AE-1 cameras is that they develop a squeal when you take the picture. While it usually doesn't affect the pix, it's kind of annoying, and I'd try and locate one (again ebay) where they say "no squeal" in the listing, or you can ask them.
If you can't do ebay, then sorry for this long, lame response, but I happen to think it's the best camera for the task. Cool looking, lightweight (by 80s standards), RELIABLE. Ciao.

Check on ebay. As a long time Minolta user I'd suggest an SRT-202 with a 50mm lens. Another excellent Minolta is the X-700 which has Aperture priority metering. You set the aperture, the camera sets the shutter speed. The Pentax K1000 is also worth considering.
You can also check at KEH, B&H, Adorama.

A few months ago, virtually every Walmart in the nation sold the Canon EOS Rebel K2 for around $200. Although not the best 35mm camera made, it would suit your requirements just fine.
Around here at least, Walmart no longer carries this camera. It might, however, be worth your time to check and see if by chance they still do in your area.

Good luck. I don't think you'll find one there. Buy online, www.freesylephoto.biz has traditional photo supplies and is a great dealer.
