I just had surgery 5 days ago, to repair cartilage on my right knee. After surgery, my knee seems to be alright, not much pain at all. The doctor advised me to straighten my knee when standing and bend it freely when sitting or lying, which was fine. This morning when I got up, every time I straighten my leg I get this shooting pain behind my knee, did I do something wrong, or is this part of the healing process?

The pain may be normal, but it won't go away by itself. You need to strengthen the muscles supporting the knee. I had the same operation, the dr. did not give me any advice, and I ended up with severe tendonitis and hardly able to walk.

Ask your doctor for a prescription to a physical therapist, who can teach you excercises to strengthen your quads (thigh muscles) and other muscles.

You may have some inflammation at the knee, which would be normal after surgery. To alleviate it, ice your knee several times a day, for 10 minutes each time. Keep your knee elevated when you're sitting. Keep on bending it to keep it from locking up. Don't stand still for too long - that way the blood pools and you'll feel more pain.

After you're all better, continue to do the exercises maybe once a week.

This pain is normal after surgery. After my similar knee surgery I had similar effects, and after I had been in physical therapy for about a week it began to get a lot better. Good luck, if you are still concerned I would talk to your doctor next time you see them.
