Postmortem means occurring after death. I believe the correct expression is postpartum depression, which means occuring after have giving birth.
Postpartum depression is also known as the "baby blues," and is not at all uncommon. Sometimes, the blues will clear up spontaneously after a while; othertimes, medical intervention--usually via antidepressants--is required.

Depression is very treatable. Don't be afraid to mention this to your doctor. I'm sure your doctor has had scores of postpartum patients with the "baby blues."
Don't be afraid of the stigma attached with taking antidepressants. Some people are off put because they recognize antidepressants as "psychiatric" medicines. If this concerns you at all, don't mention that you are taking antidepressants to others. It's nobody's business but yours.
By all means seek treatment for any long-standing blues. Medicine will probably only need to be taken for an interim period, although you will have to be weaned off medications in the future.
Watch out for Effexor, however, if the doctor tries to prescribe that antidepressant. That antidepressant is notoriously difficult to discontinue or be weaned off from. (Personal experience here; it took almost a year before symptoms of withdrawal stopped.)
You don't have to suffer with postpartum depression. Seek help, and you'll be enjoying life and your new baby very quickly!
Best of luck with your health problem. You and your new child are in my prayers.

New moms don't usually get postmortem depression (as post mortem is more commonly known as an autopsy). I think you get postpartum depression or in the UK post natal depression.
Check out the website for symptoms.

You cry a lot, you feel disconnected with your newborn, your tired & all you want to do is sleep, you have no engry. For some women it passes with a little time but with others they need to go see their doctor & get medication to help them through this time. There is nothing wrong with needing help through this, your body has had one hell of a ride for 9 months with all the hormonal changes, weight gain, then you have the baby & your body goes through another major change. Your system gets out of wack, go see your OBGYN.

I've been surfing the internet more than 3 hours today looking for answer to the same question, and I haven't found a more interesting debate like this. It's pretty worth enough for me.

post mortem means after death. If you mean post partum depression, common in new moms, it can be helped with therapy and short term use of some antidepressant like Elavil. She should talk to her OB about it.
