To be in love with someone is not a crime,is by the contrary,awesome.In your case is normal to be on love with a best friend since this person is the opposite sex.You're a human being with feelings and the hart does not know about friends what really knows is about emotions which are very normal.I don't think that tell him about your emotional state ( or in love) might create some distress in the relationship .Perhaps, he will be a little surprised but in the end, he will be taken the whole matter as something good and awesome.If I were in his shoes, that could be my reaction,however, not each person is identical regarding the thinking.I think, you must talk with him and let him know about all this.You never know what life has for you or me or him, inside of Pandora Box.
