Typically for traffic violations it's on or before your appearance date (written on the ticket). However, if you are unable to pay, you can arrange with the judge to make payments or get extra time to pay.
Things like parking fines usually have a date you are asked to pay by, or the fine will increase. If you fail to pay, the amount of the fine will be added onto your vehicle registration fees by the DMV.

Your question is very vague, since you don't state what the fine is for. When you appeared in court, you were given a fine deadline. Did you request an extension due to financial difficulty? Did you arrange a payment plan? You were provided the dates of payment, I'm sure, otherwise the court was at fault and the case to be dismissed. If that not being the case, contact the clerks office, get the date of due payment. If you don't, a bench warrant for your arrest may be issued.

Most areas will set up a payment schedule for higher fines. This needs to be discussed at the time of the court appearance. Smaller fines are usually paid before you leave the courthouse.

It's up to the Judge and his decision will be based on the amount of the fine.

It varies case by case, state by state.
They will explain or did explain all of that to you in court, or at the least its on your paperwork.
