you're doing a great job, although his school should be making him do this stuff. for school, we had to write them 3-5 times each, write a story with them, and use them in sentences. my mom would always quiz me on them out loud, and she would give me my own spelling test. have your son get out paper and a pencil and you give him a test. most teachers say the word, use it in a sentence, then say it again. you are really doing a great job though!

Have him write the words down in a white piece of paper. Cut out. Then turn them into a flash card. This way he will remember and recognize the words. Try to do it twice a day. One when he comes home from school and once before bed time (don't forget to read a book as well ). It seemed to have helped my now 2nd grade son. Results will vary of course.

I know this might seem silly but when I was young I had a really hard time remembering words for the spelling test and my teacher taught me to write the words out with my finger on something rough like carpet or concrete. She said that the texture had something to do with it (specifics I'm not sure about) but anyway it helped me ALOT so give it a try!

Last year when my son was in kindergarden and had his spelling tests and spelling Bee. I took index cards or pieces of paper and wrote one word on each of the cards and plastered them around the house.I had some above the light switch, one behind the toliet, He had a bunk bed so I put one under the bunk so when he was laying in bed and looked up, he would see the word. I had them on dressers, up above the toliet paper holder, on the tv, everywhere. Plus over top of that, I took shaving cream and put it on the table and let him write out the words on the table with shaving cream. After he was done, it also cleaned up the table really nicely at the same time.

I hang my daughters spelling words all over her room and in the kitchen that way she sees them and she can remember them...Everytime I see her looking at one I aske her what it says and then cover it and ask her to spell it...I have been doing this for 2 years and she is now going into 3rd grade and she hasn't gotten anything less than an 80 on her tests

I just read that memory strategies work with little kids. Have him come up with an little saying for the ones he has trouble with (e.g., the word is "GREEN" so he could say "great rats eat every noodle" or something like that). If he practices for a couple of days he could probably learn four or five sayings and he might have fun making them up with you. You could also have him write the consonents in one color and vowels in another color with markers in big letters, just to make him more aware of the spelling process while he writes them. Good luck!

I think what you are doing is very helpful. I always had my little girl write them, then do them out loud to me, and then look them over. We would also do an oral quiz in the morning while she was getting ready for school. If you work on them a little each night instead of a bunch the night before I think it is more effective too. Good luck!

Three times each day or three times total? My second grader gets his words on Friday. Saturday and Sunday he just copies the list down. Monday & Tuesday he copies the harder words and I tell him the easier words. Wednesday and Thursday he has to do all the words from memory. Repetition is the key to sucess! Good Luck.

Try this, when asking him to spell them also ask him for the meaning of each word. If he knows the meaning it will help him to remember the spelling.

I pick a few words per day and every time I think of it I say a word and he spells it (driving in the car, at the grocery store, walking, eating, etc). It's a game with us and my son has fun doing it to me also. Sometimes he spells and sometimes I spell. Be spontaneous with it (one word at a time) and have FUN !!
