Once God had revealed Himself and His plan of salvation to Israel and to the believers surrounding Jesus, the question arose how this truth would be passed along to posterity without its suffering distortion from later interpreters. The only obvious answer to this question was written documentation. It would be necessary to secure the revelation in a fixed, written, and authentic form so that the truth would not be lost in the transmission. God inspired it via the Holy Spirit in the believers. God said it cannot be broken therefore God protects it. 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us that it is divinely inspired.

The Bible is not a history book, but it contains a great deal of history.
Jesus said, "Man cannot live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God." The Bible is necessary for life, because it is the Word of God. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.

1 Cor 10:11 Now these things happened to them as a warning, but they were written down for our instruction, upon whom the end of the ages has come. RSV
Now these things went on befalling them as examples, and they were written for a warning to us upon whom the ends of the systems of things have arrived. NWT
Bibles were not that commonplace in ancient times, but today almost everyone has access to a bible because we are living in the last days of this system of things.

to declare salvation ...
"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ:
for it is
the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek." - Romans 1:16.
"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." - Romans 10:17.
the Bible claims to be "living" to have special powers ...
"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." - Hebrews 4:12.
The Bible was given from God to man (2 Peter 1:21; 2 Timothy 3:16) to reveal Jesus Christ as the only Saviour (John 14:6; Acts 4:12). The LORD Jesus Christ is the center and nucleus of the Bible ... from Genesis to Revelation.

The best way I can describe it is that it's a "roadmap to glory" in that we learn from it, find guidance and peace from it, as well as our chastisement when we're wondering what we did wrong and why we're being punished and it's also a hope of our renewal and repentance.

The bible is intended to be a list of laws and lessons that help humans form a structured society and a functional family unit.
It gives power to the church and religious leaders so that they can form a rudimentary government to do things like take care of the poor and punish criminals.

Some see it as a manual for life. A way to live to ensure entrance into heaven.
Others see it as a fiction designed by religious figures to control the masses and to substitute for things like reason and an individual's conscience.
