I once heard that carrots were a good treat for dogs, especially breeds prone to being overweight. Are there any treats out there like this?

I used to make these liver treats for my dogs. It's rather gross looking until baked, but they love them.

1 pound raw liver, sliced and pureed in a blender
2 tablespoons garlic powder (they LOVED garlic)
1-1 1/2 cups corn meal (enough to make the mixture like loose cookie dough)

Blend all ingredients and spoon onto greased cookie sheet. Pat it down until it looks like one huge flat cookie. Bake at 300 degrees until light brown and spongy (check the middle for any raw areas--you want it cooked).
Cool and cut into whatever size pieces your dog can easily eat in a bite or two.

Just feeding your doggy some little carrot slices occasionally would be the healthiest treat. All kinds of fruits and veggies, besides grapes/raisins, are good for dogs in moderation, says my vet. If you just give your dog a few carrot slices, or maybe some fun apple slices, it will be a much healthier treat in the long run than any processed treats.

All that I give my 2 dogs for treats anymore are the little baby carrots. At first they didn't care for them too much so I dipped them in some peanut butter. Over time I used less and less peanut butter untill they just ate the carrots. Now when the refrigerator is opened they come running for a carrot.

I wouldn't suggest giving dogs a bunch of different treats. Any change in the dogs diet can upset their stomach. Carrots are very good for dogs and the beta carotene in them helps fight bacteria that cause peridontis disease. They also strengthen the gum line to prevent bacteria from entering the bloodstream through the gums.

A few things you want to make sure to avoid are caffiene, chocolate, coffee, alcohol, avocados, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, yeast dough, raw or undercooked meats, eggs, raw bones, onions, chives, garlic, milk, and xylitol, used to sweeten foods. While some are common sense many of these are unknown to many people and can cause serious problems or even death.

My dogs love carrots! They also like apples, and sometimes I even put a little peanut butter on the apples. They go nuts for it! I've also given them a little bit of rice, balled up, as a treat. And my dogs even like lettuce.
