One thing I think some people forget is that Satan can copy many things of the Spirit of God like speaking in tongues, healings, etc... It comes down to learning to decipher between the two to know which is from God and which isn't. If you notice within the scriptures, God always has a purpose for things that are done. In regards to speaking in tongues, the Apostles spoke to people that knew the language and could understand them. And that's how the spirit of God works. It is not speaking to a group that does not understand what the person is saying. For all we know, he could be blaspheming and cursing God, but no one would know because they don't understand the language. We come back to the "purpose". If someone speaks in tongues and there's someone that understands what he/she is saying, and they're teaching and uplifting and edifying that person through the spirit, that's a purpose and a reason.
I heard about a guy that was bi-lingual and went to one of these churches that speak in tongues from the podium. He said that there was a guy speaking in the other language he knew, and he was cursing God and blaspheming. And then the guy at the podium told the congregation that he was praising God and this and that, which according to the bi-linguist was not true.
So, in summary: The spirit of God can come upon a person to speak another language ONLY if there is someone there to understand it. Also, to teach and edify and help bring that person to God. If done in any other way, it is not of God and is from Satan. God doesn't use these gifts for show and entertainment. There's always a higher purpose.

Speaking in tongues is biblically scriptural, it was not just a supernatural occurence of the first pentecost but was for all believers then and now who are called to be filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. I am very grateful and thankful for this gift because often not knowing what the perfect and good will of God is i will pray and sing with tongues knowing the Holy Spirit intercedes.

I think a lot of people are just faking it, or trying to hard or something.
I think the spirit has to totally take over your body to give the divine message to the people, and I think some people just feel an overwhelming sense of the spirit and think that is what they are supposed to do.
Some people pray in tonges when they don't know what to pray about or what to say in their prayer. The bible mentions that prayer can be done that way so the enemy won't know what you are praying about to use it against you later, but I don't know, to each their own I guess.
There has been times where a person in the church has spoken in tongues where I've felt very connected, and times where I thought it was hokey

Speaking in tongues means speaking in languages other than the language one can speak and understand.
But I have witnessed these people claiming to be speaking in tongues and believe me they speak gibberish. You can not understand any words they speak (I speak 5 languages) and yet are claiming to be speaking in tongues. What tongue? Martian maybe? or Jupiterian?
Sometimes people can do ridiculous claims just for the money...

It is the most wonderful thing that will happen to anyone in this life...it is the closest to Heaven we can be when we speak in tongues to God. If my life had to ended the night I received this great experience, I would have died happy. I just get so sad when I hear people say it is not for today. Why don't they read the book of Acts without their church thinking and just read what is says. A lot of preachers will have to answer for misleading their people one day.
43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believth in him shall receive remission of sins.
44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
------46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,============
47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

It's a very touchy subject in the Church today. I personally believe:
1) the gift of tongues is still operative in the Church;
2) contrary to the Pentacostal misunderstanding of Mark 16, speaking in tongues is NOT the only way to prove a person is truly saved;
3) there are people who truly DO speak in tongues;
4) there are more people who fake speaking in tongues, for various reasons.
I've personally witnessed a number of incidents where people spoke in tongues; it was obviously a real language. I've also witnessed the fake form and it was quite discouraging.
EDIT: To "Skalite," if they are "rolling around on the floor," then they're either acting or Satan is controlling them. The fruit of the Spirit is SELF CONTROL, not a lack thereof.

I think it is a bunch of gibberish nonsense created by religious fanatics attempting to convince others that they are speaking with god. Anyone can pretend to have this "language" and fool the fools. I've seen a few do this, and I usually went out in the hall so they didn't hear me LAUGH at them.
