Is the cat just scent-marking you or did it actually miss you?

Probably both. It wants to make sure you still smell like him/her for the next time you go out into the world - that way, the other kitties know you belong to him/her.
It probably missed you a bit too. After all, you are his/her source of food and you clean the litter box.

I hate to give you the same answer, but yes. Probably both. Mostly it missed you though, but it could also be that it wants attention. When I ignore my cat, it rubs on me until I give it a treat or scratch his head.

A cat naturally wants to scent mark you. However, they are affectionate creatures and also show their affection with rubbing, and purring.

It misses you (my cat rubs against my legs and meows when i am not around sometimes) mabey both
