I'm sorry you're going through this, but I don't understand your objection to having him spend some time in a psychiatric unit. It's far better than jail, which is where he's headed if he doesn't get properly diagnosed and treated. Calling the cops on him is a bit unfair, because he clearly isn't seeing the right therapist, nor is he on the right meds if he's taking any. At some point, you need to reclaim discipline in your home, but that's further down the road. Right now this kid is screaming for help, and if you don't get him the right kind, this will simply escalate until something truly awful happens. To be a bit blunt, you've been too passive about it for too long. Do some research and find a good place.

I'm not a parent, but I know first hand about depression and anxiety.

There are many, many different medications available to help with anxiety and depression. Just because Lexapro didn't work doesn't mean another one won't.

Also, a very important part of treatment is therapy. Medications alone will not "fix" anything. It's really great to have someone impartial to talk to about anything. And they can't tell anyone else. The therapist can't even tell you what they talk about in their sessions.

The links below may help you understand depression and anxiety a little more. They are great resources for support as well. The second one, though a little scary, is important to look at.

Good luck to both you and your son.

Sounds like me 18 years ago! God am i that old. LOL I have been on antidepressants most my life. I think they do more bad than good, unfortunately. The biggest cause of anxiety and depression when I was a kid was my mother. Just leave him alone give him his space. Find something he truly enjoys and encourage it. Be it music you hate or whatever. The only thing I really liked growing up was defiant music and drugs. It is hard to encourage that!. Really give him lots of space, dont ask him lots of questions and leave him be. He needs to learn how to think, how to deal with his emotions on his own. Anti D's dont work. However for anxiety, and keep this in mind TRue Anxiety, As in PAralyzing anxiety like I have try xanax and atavin. However these are very addictiong narcotics. The upside is they work and dont mess with your brain like antideppresants. Anywasy good luck. IF you nedd more advice feel free to email me @ roguetrader12002@yahoo.com

I'm not a parent, too young, but I have dealt with anxiety and depression since my pre-teen years. I'm twenty now and understand it through experience and research. It's toughest, I think, when you're young because you depend on others to help you, but they can't get inside your head, and it's difficult for children to communciate their feelings to adults. This happens to adults, too, don't get me wrong, but at least adults who are able can manage themselves much more efficiently.

I've written two articles on anxiety, and either one may help you if your son is having panic attacks.

How to Identify Anxiety Disorders: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/347123/how_to_identify_anxiety_disorders_a.html

and

Surviving a Panic Attack: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/348589/surviving_a_panic_attack.html

Someone mentioned not taking medication, but I disagree. I think medication can be a reliable helping hand, but not if your son isn't getting professional treatment at the same time. Medication is only bumper to block some of the worst feelings, but if you're not learning how to treat the symptoms with other means, pills won't be as helpful. Proper use of medication can help a child far more than it can hurt.

If you can find a good councelor, you can sit down and have a three-way meeting and get to the source of the problem, and then solve it. It sounds like your son suffers from social anxiety but only a trained professional can tell and only if he's in the same room and having a thorough conversation.

The best way that you, as his parent, can help him is to understand what he is going through, positively reinforce his self confidence, make him feel loved, and that you're going to be there for him. Anxiety cannot be beaten whole-sale, but only by baby steps. It's a day to day fight, collecting little bits of success. If you take the approach that set backs and bad days are learning experiences, you can achieve a state of mind to better cope with anxiety.

My youngest daughter who will be 15 next week has suffered from anxiety and depression since she was 9 years old and the doctor gave her wellburitan and seroquel for the anxiety. The only problem that she's had is that one of the side effects of seroquel is weight gain and she did gain weight but they were able to counteract that with topamax. Since she's been on both of those medications for depression and anxiety she's not had any serious anxiety attacks and her school works has improved so much that last year she was on the honor roll for the whole school year. Not all anti-depressants work for everyone. Wellburtain works for my daughter but not for me. You will have to talk to your son's doctor and see if he can recomend another medication that might work out better for him and see if there is something that the doctor can give
him for the anxiety belive me it can be dealt with. Before my daughter was put on medication she would have such bad anxiety attacks that it looked like she was having grand mal sizures which means that her whole body was shaking uncontrolablly. It was one of the scareiest things that I've ever seen and I've had to deal with I was so glad when they were able to give her something that helped stopped the anxiety attacks and ever since she's has minor attacks where her hands will shake but no major ones. Please talk to his doctor it can be helped my daughter was and now she's a much happeier child and hopes to graduate valavictorian of her class.

I'm not a partent I suffer from anxiety... I take Ativan only as needed for them I may take one pill this month and I may not need any for the next three, I just never know... it only happens now when I PMS. It used to happen daily till I stopped all intake of caffine! Hope this helps! And for depression I found Zen it gives me an inner strength I did not know I had. It changed my point of view on life, therefore when my thoughts and out looks changed so did my depression, I have less but I do have a chemical embalance called bipolar I also have P.T.S.D. . But I am not on perminate drugs for anything! I have found a Dr. that works with me and listens to me and now I have found what works I treat myself with prescription drugs only when I have to sometimes I choose not to and to just let it pass but at one time I never thought I would have be able to do that!

I do not have children with this problem, but I do.
I have severe anxiety almost to the point of agoraphobia. I am on Zoloft. The anxiety is not gone, but is more manageable.

I do not know about the drug for someone so young, but perhaps worth asking his MD about.
