I have really dry eyes, and they've been like that for about a year. I went to the eye doctor and she gave me lubricating eye drops that don't seem to help. then my mom suggested putting ice on them because it helps her when she has eye problems...that doesn't seem to help much either. any tips?

I have extremely dry eyes. And it's only made worse when I wear my contacts. Every time I go to my doctor he always seems shocked at what he see's. (Some how you can see spots or something on my eyes, indicating dry spots or something! Who knows...) He uses some eye thing that like presses up against my eye ball. ANYWAY! He recommended that I try the Acuvue (or w/e) Oasys contacts. That didn't help and was tooo expensive. My doctor hasn't really been able to give me anything that has really helped my eyes. I think I've just learned to deal with it. It's been an issue for maybe 4 or 5 years now..So I don't notice it as much. But like the others said...Fans and things can really dry them out. One thing that did actually kinda help..I just remembered this..It's a drop called Refresh Plus. I quit using it because it's a rather thick eye drop and sorta clouded my contacts. But since you don't seem to wear them maybe they will work for you. =]

Some eyes do not produce enough fluid and some eyes do not retain fluid because of their shape:

- Drink lots of water
- Avoid alcohol
- Avoid salt
- At night use an ointment or jell designed for the eyes
- Buy a cup and eyewash to bathe your eyes as recommended.

Are you sleeping in front of a fan....or have fans in your house? That will dry out your eyes. Also a car air conditioner might dry them out...or the wind and dirt/dust coming into the car when you're driving or riding. Are you using cleaning chemicals that might do this? Maybe you're allergic to something.

Well, if those eyedrops don't help, i suggest trying other brands.. Or eyedrops called Restasis, which actually stimulate your eyes into making more of their own tears. If you wear contact lenses, that could be why your eyes are dry.. Or else if you are in an air-conditioned or heated environment.

keep using lubricating eye drops, and try to keep out of the sun (or at least wear a hat!!)

also, splashing cold water on them in the morning and before bed works well...

hope i helped!

Contact your eye doctor. There are several prescriptions available for dry eyes. He/she may also want to do some test to determine what is causing it. There are underlying conditions which may cause this.
