I don't know if there's an "official" answer to it, but I think it just became the victim of the expansion of NASCAR to other venues. As other tracks have been built, some locations fell off (since they don't race 52 weeks a year), and Rockingham was one of the unfortunate cuts from the schedule.

As exciting as "The Rock" was it did not sell out and if it could not sell out it's 70,000+ seats NASCAR felt it needed to look elsewhere where they could get more Fans to come in and watch.

Despite all the TV, Radio, Internet, and various licensing agreements; it is the live events that are teh bread and butter of NASCAR. With both The Rock and Lowes being so close; and Lowes being the biggest and most spectacular of the two; it was only a matter of time till Rockingham faced it's inevitable doom.

I miss the Rock; but I am enjoying the racing at Texas that has taken it's place. Being that only Jeff Burton is the only repeat Winner at Texas; it makes the track that much more interesting to watch.

I use to live 15 miles from that great little track, I loved it...Its all about money, Nascar wanted the Calif $$$$, better TV revenues.....Nascar screwed Rockingham and Darlington, they took the Southern 500 away from Darlington as well, to put the Labor Day race out here in Fontana... Even with free parking for the race on sunday, again it won't be a sellout.. Rockingham would need a big investor to get that track up to new standards now with luxury suites, etc.. The Rock as it was known was a great track some great racing back in the day. Its going to 100 degrees out here at the race track in Fontana this weekend, I'll be there all three days, but in my heart this 500 mile race, belongs back in Nascar Tradition, the Southern 500 in Darlington. Nascar doesn't seem to care about tradition....Bring on the money..

Sources say SMI will buy the Rockingham track for 100-million dollars. Bruton Smith, the chairman of SMI, plans to shut down Rockingham and move that race to Texas Motor Speedway. Smith says NASCAR promised him they would give him a race at his Texas Motor Speedway, but that never happened and he had to go out and find his own. So SMI shareholders believe a deal to buy the Rockingham track and move the race to Texas will finally fulfill that promise from years ago. You may remember Smith set a precedent for moving races when he co-purchased the North Wilkesboro track years ago. That race is now at Texas Motor Speedway. So this new deal would likely mean two races that used to be in North Carolina are now in Texas.(WFMYnews2.com)(4-10-2004)

This was the result of the Texas Lawsuit that it had only one race per year.

Shaggy: You want to take away a Vegas Date? There is only one Cup race at Vegas.

The 2nd California race came from the Labor Day weekend race at Darlington, to California on the same weekend. That is why the first race is early in the year, and Ca. is not SMI, it is ISC.

Rockingham met it's demise for two reasons. First was that it never sold out and we all know NASCAR is about making money. It's a greed thing for the France family. Second was they needed a second date for the west coast pukes so so long Rockingham. That was their justification. Darlington almost met the same fate but they've manged to sell out the last 3 years. If it hadn't been for that, Darlington would be no more. Even with the new seating section this year, they still sold out. As long as Darlington continues to sell out, they may survive. There's plans for even more seating.

NASCAR sold out for what they felt was bigger and better tracks. Places like Cali don't sell out either and Rockingham always had great racing.

Nascar has taken away the track's of the south. The track's that have root's and history to expand by building track's out west and up north.

Track's like The Rock and North Wilkesboro are of a by gone era and in which we will never see the likes of again .

One reason was because of poor fan turnouts at the track... I personally enjoyed it much more than pocono or las vegas. They should take one of those races and give it back to the rock
