MY father-in-law's helath has been declining, rapidly. He has an old corvette that is difficult to drive and has decided to give it to my husband. We should be happy to receive such a generous gift but it makes my husband incredibly sad because this makes him except that his dad is getting old and can't do these things anymore. We told him to sell the vette and buy something he can drive but he has so many memories of the two of them working on it that he wants to pass it down, not to mentio nthis was his dream car. We feel like we want to repay him for this but we do not have the money to actually pay him for the car, and he wouldn't except the money. what should we do? do you give a thnak you gift? it seems so awkward to take his prized possesion b/c he is to old??? any suggestions?

It is always difficult to admit that one's parents are aging. I feel for your husband. Perhaps it would make him feel better to realize that it will give his father joy to know that his prized car and all the memories it carries will stay in the family. For your husband to reject it probably appears to his father as if he doesn't feel it is worth the effort.

It's important to your fil, accept the gift graciously. Perhaps hubby can get it in good working order and use it to drive his father places on the weekends, such as running errands or something. That would be a blessing to his father and more memories for them both to treasure later.

yes, accept the gift with grace, and realize this is what your father in law wanted to do for his son.

it's not something you repay or give a "thank you" GIFT for... saying thank you and that it's appreciated will suffice.

take care and i'm sorry to hear that your FIL is ill...

just try to be there for him on a almost daily basis. help take care of anything he needs to have done and invite him to supper nightly or take him out to eat. the best payment that you can give him is your time and love.

Accept the gift, cherish it and never let anyone borrow that car.
