Peanut butter is specifically made from peanuts. So indeed, peanut butter would be a nut butter. But if someone ask if you what some nut butter you may want to ask what nut the butter is made from.
Nut butter refers to any butter made from nuts.
Nut butter refers to the mashing of nuts to create a spread. Other nut butters from common nuts include:
Walnut butter
Almond butter
Hazelnut butter
Macadamia nut butter
Pecan butter
Of course we all know techinically peanuts are not nuts but legumes. But for all intents and purposes they are referred to as a nut.

Peanut butter is a kind of nut butter. Peanuts are considered to be nuts (although they are really legumes, as others have noted above)..so nut butter is a general term that could refer to peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, or other nut butters. Peanut butter just means butter made from peanuts.

Peanut butter is made from peanuts, while 'nut butter' can be referring to any kind of 'butter' made from any nut. For example, almond butter, cashew butter, peacan butter, hazelnut butter, etc.
Are some nuts, seeds, or butters better for you than others? Not really, unless you're looking for a specific nutrient. If you're using these foods as a major protein source, check out soy nuts (roasted soybeans) and soy nut butter. They have 11 grams of protein per ounce, and 4 grams per tablespoon, respectively. Pumpkin seeds, black walnuts, pine nuts, and peanuts have slightly more protein than do other seeds and nuts. Peanut butter is slightly higher in protein than other nut butters. Nuts contain some zinc, although it may not be well absorbed. Pumpkin seeds, cashews, and cashew butter are slightly higher in zinc than other products. Almonds, almond butter, and tahini contain slightly more calcium. See the table on the following page for more information about the nutrient contents of nut and seed butters.

A peanut is NOT a nut.. It's a legume or bean.. So, nut butters refer to actual nuts.. Almonds, cashews, hazelnut and so on....
